'Fraid this time next year, Brett'll may be at the Bonnet Carre spillway getting ready to run his first field trials.

This year, instead of the playoffs, GB gets Favre's tear-stained benediction of fare-thee-well-without-me, and appears it's an irrevocable farewell despite the "soon" decision promised on yea or nay. Looks like he's made it a classier thing if he goes (2d or 3d place in all those career categories) than if he returns (1st place in all those career categories).

However, if GB can trade for his protege, JP Losman, we Titletownies may not have to endure the hangover to Favre's retirement.

Nice while it lasted--all those winning seasons and even this year: finishing 8-8 and what would've been the hottest team going into the playoffs--yup, I said hot. Even if in the NFC, that's no more than room temperature. Gotta like what GB did down the stretch to entice the gunslinger into giving it another year--a 6-2 road record and the typical strong December with a team that started the season as The Dead End Kids and Brett.

Now, as for "nice while it lasted"--nostalgia--here's one for Mr Booty about the flipside of beating Da Bears:

The Associated Press said:
It was the first time a quarterback (Grossman) threw three interceptions and two completions since New Orleans' Richard Todd in 1984.
Memories, eh, Franco?

Yea, I remember that game Mike! The Saints replaced one Bama QB with another and soon brought in an aging and over-da-hill Kenny Stabler. In the 40 years that the Saints have been playing ball, they have only had three quality QB's; Manning, Everett and now Brees!

Hard not to like Brett Favre, what a class act and competitor. I think passing up on those records might be too hard to pass up. However, I don't think if he did set new records that they would last very long. That New Orleans kid, Payton what's-his-name will own every major QB record when he gets done with the game.

Would love to see Brett in the spillway! He's talked to several FT Pros, I bet he winds up in either Farmer's or M. Smith's camp. 8)

Franco, how dare you short shrift (Dr.) Gary Cuozzo! And remember who dat lined up behind him in the Saints' backfield that first year?--Mssrs. Taylor and Hornung.

And how can you list the trinity of QBs and neglect the greatest Saints' signal caller of all time? Charlton Heston  He was only about 62 years old--(roughly Stabler's appearance the time The Snake had turned 30)--in "Number One." Ah for the days of fine thespian special teamers like Danny Abramowicz and Monty Stickles...

Betting Brett does get into the FT game then, eh?

How could I forget Mr Cuozzo, Mr Johnny U's backup with the then Baltimore Colts. And that first #1 draft pick from Bama, Less Kelly LB that played one season before being let go.

I did forget Billy Kilmer! He threw the best floating duck football in the game. Good enough to lead the Redskins to a SB win several years later.

Brett might windup with one of those Wisconsin no-name FT trainers. Mike somebody-or-other or maybe one of those others that I can't remember their names! With him owning several thousand acres in south Mississippi, I'll bet he moves back south after his retriement.

Franco, that No. 1 pick was the biggest RB (LB) the Bear ever had, Les Kelley, 235-pounds of romping, stomping, three national championship ring talent. (Played not long before Bear's All-America middle guard, Sammy Gellerstedt, tipped the scales at 182 [though listed a few pounds heavier]). A brute on offense and defense, Les--till he hit the NFL.

Anyhow to get this back on topic, sort of, double-checked the title of the movie Chuck Heston starred in as Saints' QB, and somebody had posted this review:
Charlton Heston is painfully miscast as a veteran quarterback who won't accept that it's well past time for him to hang up his spikes. Very few of his teammates look like football players. The melodrama concerning his relationship with wife Jessica Walter borders on the hysterical. Another humorous facet is the continued reference to the New Orleans Saints as perrennial Super Bowl champions even though they had never even won a playoff game until last year, their 36th year in the league.
Except for this "miscast" bit, could be Brett and GB this year from start to finish. (Oh, the Saints' disclaimer. )

Number One, what a forgetable movie. Kept asking myself, "What the heck is Moses playing QB for the Saints".

Les Kelley, I stand corrected! He was a Running Back not a Linebacker, see how forgetable his Pro days were.

So Mike, who are you picking for this year's SB Champs?

Now Franco, if you'd called him Leroy Kelley back then in Alabama you might've got lynched. Times change though and hey, saw where Wilbur Jackson finally got in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and the "other" Jackson, Ron "Poppa Jack" Jackson--who coulda, woulda, shoulda been the Bear's first black player, well he ain't getting in no halls of fame, but he helped get the Red Sox their first World Series win in 90 years as batting coach.

Who to pick in the Super Bowl? Could Roger Goodell's first significant act as NFL commissioner be tabbing two teams from the same conference to play in the game for the first time? Certainly would keep the NFC from embarrassing itself, though the Iggles could surprise...

(Of course, if it hadn't been for the Washington Nationals--I mean Redskins--Philly'd have to get past GB first [trying to stay on topic here]. Instead, the maladorous Jints and their straight-handoff-no-risk kid quarterback and their soon to be dearly departed control freak coach Coughlin get the privilege. And the Nationals--I mean Redskins--are still the landfill of the league, if not the worst of all pro sports franchises, even with their high-priced treasures.)

I agree, the Eagles will be the team to beat in the NFC. They are playing the best ball of any of the playoff teams right now, both NFC and AFC. So, I think an NFC team might win it all. After the Eagles beat the Giants next weekend (I'm a Giants fan too), they come to New Orleans. Can the Saints beat them twice in one season? I sure hope so! Both teams are very similar in style of play. Offenses that can move the ball at will and solid defenses. The Saints defense has improved all season long. I'll give the Saints the edge on Offense and the Eagles the edge on Defense.

Ok, now back on track......................
Pretty emotional interview after the game, ankle surgery right off the bat this a.m. in Greenbay, having one daughter graduating from High School this spring, wife recovering from breast cancer.
Lots of things for him to consider.
His records will stand for a very long time..........
I don't know of a classer athlete??
Hopefully he stands by his word and tells all us what he plans to do right away instead of last year (April).
Go Badgers!!!!!

Franco, now I will stray from topic: You think Saban's coming to T-town? I got to pondering it yesterday after the Dolphins finished 6-10 and his career trajectory now seems to be in lockstep with Pete Carroll and Spurrier and several others who haven't mastered the pros (with Kirk Ferentz in the on-deck circle).

Yet now 'Bama's flashing $4M a year and a $5M signing bonus at Saban as if he were the 2d or 72d coming of Knute Rockne.

Guess I find it funny looking back those 40 years you cited since the Saints came into being, and remembering two or three other franchises originated then, too, all of them in the South. And the Bear was always prominently mentioned for each job, especially with the Dolphins. George Wilson was their first coach and I recall it being said that the NFL could never pay Bear Bryant enough to get him to leave Alabama.

Well, that offer of all the Dreamland BBQ he can eat is a tough offer to walk from. BBQ and white bread, no sides! :D

My hunch is that he left LSU for the bigger challenge in the NFL. I think he'll stay put in Miami for a while.

You have to look at Brett Favre's ankle surgery two ways. He decided to have surgery immediately at the end of the season on New Years day. Generally athletes like as much time as they can get to recover before the next season. You could argue that he had the surgery so fast just to get over with it, but mostly likely due to pain. Favre has shown that despite his family tragedy, he still has played. I would put money on it that his ankle has been causing problems all year and he wants a couple weeks after the surgery to decide how it feels. His ankle is being scoped and the joint will be cleaned up. He will be back on his feet within a week and after a month, Favre will know if he can hold up another season. If Favre's ankle holds up and Green Bay goes out and picks up some veteran players, then he will be back.

Whether Favre retires this year or next year, he will be sorely missed. Not only has he made an impact on Green Bay and the NFL, he has been an ideal athlete putting him in a class above the rest. In the age of Terrell Owens and Randy Moss, Favre is a reminder of the past and how playing a game was for fun and not for large contracts.

So will he or won’t he? Well the way the team acted after the game and the way he acted during his after game interview, it looked like a fine farewell to me (hate to say that) . His family spends most of their time in Mississippi; oldest daughter is a senior at a High School in Mississippi. He cancelled his ankle surgery. I thing this was it…again, hate to say that. Regardless of if this is it or not the day he makes the announcement will be a day of mourning here in the not so frozen tundra (strangest winter I have ever seen). I guess we will know for sure in two weeks….
