I've heard that birds can carry coccidia and that dogs (especially pups) can contract it from bird poop. Does anyone know what birds are prone to carry coccidia? Specifically, can ducks carry it? Are they likely to?

A few months ago I used a puppy crate to house a live mallard for a couple of days while I used it to train my dog to fetch a shackled/wing clipped duck. Naturally the duck crapped all over the inside of the kennel. I was going to clean out the puppy kennel and put it away for later use with a future puppy (probably several years from now). However, I've read that coccidia is very hard to kill, so if ducks are common coccidia carriers, I'll either go buy some ammonia to wash the crate in or I'll just throw it away. I don't want to doom a future pup to a likely case of coccidia.

Thanks for any info.

Coccidias infecting dogs are very host specific (cross infection from other species does not occur)
