Having built over a hundred "facsimilies", the 'cords' were 3/8" bungee. Most hardware stores carry it in bulk, although not many have it in black, which is the preferable color for 2 reasons: camo and longer lasting in the Sun.
Most of these same stores can order it in bulk for you. I've used Ace hardware in the past.
