This is a plug for the Crown Inn in Colby, Kansas - a great place for dogs - where I am stuck in a winter blizzard.

Late Sunday afternoon, I left the Coastal Bend Trial in Rockport, Texas. Drove 150 miles and spent Sunday night in La Grange, Texas. Started driving at 7 am on Monday. When I got to Salina, Kansas (700 miles down the road), it started snowing. I pushed on to Colby, Kansas (another 200 miles down the road) and decided to stop as blizzard conditions made it impossible to see.

I like to stay at the Crown Inn, when I have to stop in Colby, because the rooms are clean, the rates are reasonable, and there is great airing here.

Woke up early and decided to push for home in Golden (another 250 miles). Got 200 yards down the road, hit a patch of black ice, and slid off the road at 15 mph. Tow truck pulled me out at 7 am

Tried to get on the road again at 10 am. Conditions worse. Pulled back into the motel, told owner I was concerned about dogs (it is 7 degrees and the wind is howling) and would be glad to pay extra damage deposit to have dogs in room. He said no need, just let us know if you have an accident so we can clean it up

Now that is hospitality!!!!

So if you need to stop near Colby, try the Crown Inn (785) 462-3943

Dandy post, Ted. I am a firm believer in "plugging" all motels that allow dogs in the room, whether a deposit is needed or an additional fee is charged.

Whenever I get to an overnight destination I'm unfamilier with, my first question of the motel operator is "Do you allow dogs in the room?" If not, I go elswhere. I'm always traveling with my dogs, so they are first consideration when lodging. If my companions aren't allowed in my room, then we search until we find a room that welcomes them.

If my travels put me in Colby, KS overnight, I'll be sure to use the Crown Inn. Thanks again for the info.

Where in the world is Colby, Kansas? I'd say you should consider yourself fortunate. Lately, it seems that more places are adamantly anti-pet.

Anyway, when are you going to update your site with the new dogs? I mean, really, Ted, if you didn't spend so much time galavanting across the country, maybe you would have time to update your website.

I wish more handler/trainers would do this. :D

More and more motels are becoming "dog unfriendly" on the east coast....
some don't even want you staying there, even if you leave the dog in the truck, because of "deposits" on the grounds around the motels.

I'm very happy my parents taught me to "watch where you step".

That was a very nice heads up on the hotel. But, I have to say I've been wondering the same thing about the website. Reading about you and your dogs kind of gets a guy dreaming a bit.

It's about three hours out of Denver on I-70. When I am headed east, I stop there to

- air dogs
- get Diesel
- get Starbucks

When I head east from the Kansas trials, and I am too tired to make the push home, I stop at the Crown Inn.

Older motel with exterior doors, firm beds and clean bathrooms

What more can you ask for?

Ted,

Be safe - the roads are slick here - saw two roll overs on my way to work and there is little to no snow on the ground, just a light drizzle of rain that is freezing FAST!

Congrats on your performance at Coastal Bend, too...

Ted-

I'll second the Congrats on Coastal Bend & the travel safely thoughts!!

Nice to hear that this motel is as concerned about the dogs as they are about the person paying the bill. Doubt I'll ever be in Kansas, but good to know.

Ted,
Since you're just hanging out at the hotel waiting out the storm why not walk Mootsie into the lobby and show off her Red Ribbon from this weekends Amateur?

Congratulations!

Oh yea, Mozzie and Buffy can tag along with their Greenies too!

Another add to the motel list -- Quality Inn and Comfort Inn in Thomasville Ga. They have a pet charge of $39.00 only if your dog screws up the room. No charge if dog has been good. I have never been charged a pet fee there.

I called the Days Inn in Thomasville, they have a pet charge of $10.00 per night per dog.

I haven't found a Red Roof Inn that dislikes the dogs. I've asked about them in the room and been told that until dog's start stealing the towels. they were OK.

You gotta add the Holiday Inn express as being dog friendly in Colby, KS as well. They let several people take their goldens and labs in last march when we were snowed in during a white out blizzard.

The Holiday Inn there was kind enough to let us stay in one of their last rooms, and was organizing people to double up in some rooms if they were by themselves, and opened a back room for those with sleeping bags. It was also nice to have an indoor swimming pool for the kids to burn energy. They also had wireless internet for those with laptops to send out email and check weather.

I hope this helps for the future.

The Best Western in Great Bend, KS is wonderful...when you show up to register and they know you're a hunter and they find out you have dogs, they ask you to "please take them into the room with you".

Of course, when I hunt out that way, I stay at the Rosewood Hilton  meaning the guest room at Rosewood Kennels in Larned.
