Diatomaceous earth-have any used this for

I was asked by a neighbor about the use of feed grade diatomaceous earth to kill fleas on her small dog. I have no experience with this product and would like information from those of you that may have. Any comments from Vets? Bill

The theory behind DE is that it coats the exoskeleton of the insect, keeping it from breathing. In order for it to work on a dog, you would have to keep the dog COVERED in it--too dirty to be in the house or even to pet.

I don't believe there are any scientific articles to prove or disprove whether feeding it does anything to control internal parisites. However, I don't believe it would work if "coating" the varmit is what is supposed to kill them.
