What is the typical retrievers reaction to a first trip to a beach with crashing waves, etc... ?
they love it...

I've only taken mine to the beach once many years ago (grew up on the beach and took dogs back home for visit)...

I just get worried they'll get carried away! :)

Don't use tennis balls as fetch items...they hold too much sand. It is NOT fun to try and find an emergency vet because your dog needs an enema for sand impaction. And ditto what John said about bringing fresh water. If they drink salt water (and they all do at first) in addition to making them puke it will also give them the squirts and with not much warning so be prepared...

That said, I've never had one scared of waves breaking and they love to crash through the surf and play in the ocean.

As we drove away, he sat in his kennel looking at the ocean and whining...
