I have started my e-collar conditioning by, following the Mike Lardy e-collar conditioning DVD.
It took me 3 days on the sit command to get my dog to finally make a decent response.
The issue I have now is, when I tell him to sit when he is at heel......he sits 3 feet away from me and slightly turns away. Is this a normal response?
Also, when I give the "here" command now, he no longer comes to me and sometimes backs up away from me or just sits there and looks at me. Is this a normal response? Should I be moving on to the "here" command?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just afraid that I have screwed up my dog..............

I an not an expert, but I did watch Lardy' E-Conditioning. The dog may be jumping from you side when you say sit because you may be stimulating him all the time when he is near you (you may not even realize it). When your walking your dog at heel tell him to sit and not administer a correction a few times and praise the heck out of him for the sit. The dog may be thinking the correction is comming from just being near or next to you.

Because you have been working on sit primarily and the dog gets a correction for not sitting quickly or for continuing to walk or come toward you is probably the reason for him not comming when called. Lardy talks about that instance in the DVD. I think he moves onto the Here command when he is lagging like that.

The DVD is put together very well, with alot of information. I must have viewed it at least 8 times. I think it will answer many of your questions if you veiw it again.

Happy Training.

make sure your not nicking him on every single "sit". Give him some freebies. If he didnt do it with the healing stick mabey you should back up a step and use it. Hit the nick at the same time you give a little pop with the healing stick and slowly phase out the stick. Im no pro but just my two cents.
Oh and with the here keep the choke collar on him and use that in conjunction with the nick on the collar. Give him a quick tug and nick at the same time and when thats reliable start getting rid of the rope.

Lardy's DVD covers the whole process pretty thoroughly (as has been pointed out) -- and Click looks pretty good going through the whole process -- watch the DVD as many times as you need to -- listen to the commentary between Mike and Dennis Voight -- read the manual that comes with DVD

I'll jump on the bandwagon, watch the video several times. It has been awhile since I CC'd a dog, but I seem to remember that Mike CC's to sit first. If you are heeling your dog and nicking for sit while it is beside you, the first thing it's going to do is start lagging - that is a natural response. Mike shows you how to handle that - speed up even to a jog, pop with the choker - "here" "heel." till the dog is back heeling again.

Nicking at your side will make the dog start to think that the spot by your side is HOT, and he won't want to be there. You have to encourage him to come back... When he comes back to your side - Big GOOD DOG!

Is your dog's sit response improving or degrading. If it's improving but he wants to lag, it might be time to move on to CC to here. If the dog's sit response is degrading, you need to watch Mikes timing really closely, because chances are, yours is off.

Once the two sepearte responses are good, both sit and here, you can start mixing them in a single session. "Sit" nic, then try to heel. If the dog lags, "here" nic while picking up the tempo. The nic has now replaced the choker pop to get him going. You'll see it on the tape... Be very very tuned in to the dog. Watch the timing on corrections, and the instant you start getting the correct response - GOOD DOG. If the dog's tail starts to go down, and his head starts to drop, thorw a fun bumper or two, then proceed.

Hope this helps...

All this is assuming that the OB work is very very good before you start with the collar. If you watch Click closely, you can see that Mike has him pretty well polished with the check chord and choker before he starts with the collar!

When I give the command he looks very worried.....his head lowers a bit. His attitude changes from session to session.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's confused. He doesn't know what you want. back up a step and move foward more slowly. Sounds like too many nicks per session. Try fewer nicks (Jurney says to start with 3-5 per day) and more freebies. I haven't watched Lardy vids in a while.

Thanks for all the replies. I moved on to the "here" command....and WOW, what a change!! The dog has really put 2 and 2 together now. Also, I have lower the intensity level and have gotten a much much better response!

Once again.....thank you very very much for your replies!!
