Has any one out there had a dogs ear swell up with fluid.

My young female while playing with my male kept biting his ears. Now one of his ears is full of blood/fluid. How do you handle that? I have been to the vet they gave me some pills to help with infection but the swelling is not going down at all. I have drained it like 3 times with a syringe. It just keeps filling back up.

Any advice for this?

If you are talking about the ear flap filling with fluid (serum). You should have a vet treat that. The vet will put holes in the ear flap, so the fluid can continue to drain out and eventually dry up. The ear should be bandaged for awhile after this procedure as well.

Sounds like a hematoma, I had a dog with an ear problem. She shook her head too much, and the ear swelled like a balloon. Had it drained several times, then the Vet stitched it up from one side to the other like a quilt. Waited the required time and removed the stitches only to have it balloon again. Whole process again and the second time it was O. K. Ears and tails are hard to get healed cause they're always moving.

That was years ago, they might have a different treatment now.

I'm sure your Vet will know what to do. As I remember we tried draining it hoping it would get stopped. I guess it's a broken blood vessel between the ear flaps

John, The "quilting" still works today. The ear will go down and still look like an ear. Years ago a friend of mine was keeping a trial dog for a friend and the trial dog developed a hematoma except the owner had not left contact info in the event something like this happened. The vet said he could cut off the edge of the ear to drain it, but that would make the dog look one sided, maybe they should trim BOTH ears to match.   I was not around when the owner returned, but I'll bet he wasn't happy. Wish that vet had known about quilting! Bill

Years ago one of my labs who was 14 at the time, developed a hematoma in each ear. She was treated by 2 different vets in the practice who each used a different method on each ear. One ear was drained and buttons sewn into the ear. The other ear was drained and had splints taped to the ear. After it was all said and done the only differernce in the ears was the splinted ear had one tiny crinkle in the edge.

More than one way to fix an ear regards,

My old dog Ice had chronic hematoma's in both ears. We eventually did surgery on both where we sliced the ear from base to tip on the underside, cut out the chambers, inserted a drain tube and stiched the ears shut. The ears healed but were never the same. That being said they did not result in hematoma's. Poor old boy ended up passing at 6. My avatar is a pic of him at 3 months old in the river in Lolo MT. I miss that dog every day of my life.

Paul, I've always gotten a smile out of your avatar and figured it was a pup. It's a great picture, and sorry you lost him so young.

On the topic, I've only had ear hematoma's twice - both times when other dogs got aggressive and took a good chomp on the ear flap. We had the vet take a look, watched them carefully and they resolved. Thank goodness. But it looked like hell and couldn't have felt very special either. Back then I think a little Rimadyl was administered as well just for sheer analgesic relief. But that was a long time ago, not sure what the protocol would be today.

Both our dogs have had this happen!!!!

The first time and dog, We didnt have a clue as to what had happened! The vet deducted it was probably an allergic reation to something like a insect bite(Bee,spyder ect)

All the syptoms as above

The second dog I am SURE was stung by a yellow jacket as I saw the thing pester her and then she snapped at it and it bit her in the mouth! (She yelped)

BOTH ears swelled up badly in a matter of minutes!

In both cases the vet gave her a shot of some sort of steroid, and we were instructed to give Liqid Benadryl for a period of a few days!

ears were better in a couple of days!

Hope things improve!!

Gooser

P.S.
The first dogs eppisode was in the middle of winter! Drove to the Vet in a blinding blizzard!

Thanks for all the help. It seems to have slowed down a little.I drained it last night and rubbed it down. This afternoon it was only a little bubble. I hope we have seen the worst it that.

Thanks again for the tips.

I have had a vet tell me to let it alone and that eventually the hemotoma will go down by itself.
