My male tied with his daughter on Sat. She hasn't dripped for over two weeks and isn't hardly swollen. She is 9 months of age.

I feel like such an idiot.

Any advice on terminating pregnancy would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

Richard......

Don't feel bad.....stuff happens. My male tied with my female on day 18, I was equally upset... I wasn't planning a litter at that time, she still hadn't had her hips done. She didn't take...... :D

I will be wishing for the same luck for you.

Just be careful what you choose. Some protocols have a higher chance of pyometria. I had to do it once. :(

This was several years ago, so things may have changed. They used lutalyse, which is supposed to be safer than progesterone/estrogen (whatever the shot is that's a one-time deal).

Just watch for advice here today and be VERY VERY CAREFUL. Pyometra can be dangerous and deadly. And that's I THINK the main thing you're worrying about with terminating pregnancy.

If I ever have to deal with it again, I'll probably risk the puppies versus pyometra...

How long had she been bleeding and swollen and when was the first time you noticed her in heat? I would also be more willing to play the cards if the timing wasn't when most bitches would be bred.

Heat Cycle

I noticed her dripping around 3 weeks ago.

What worries me is she's only 9 months. Would it be harder to recover from the treatment, than it would be for her to whelp pups?

This is a very nice little bitch and the owner wants to breed her down the road. So to fix or spay is not an option.

Owner wants me to terminate pregnaqncy, but I just want to do what's best for the dog.

Thanks,

Richard

I would consult your vet or wait for a vet to reply on here.... I hate that it's your client dog, that makes it 10x worse. I had it with one of my dogs and it sucked enough that way...

Just make sure your client knows the risks AS STATED BY A VET (NOT what I wrote). And then let him make the decision.

I am not an expert on this area, but my friend did try to terminate, and it didn't work entirely, she had one puppy, quite unexpected. She did raise the pup and placed her as a pet. I would just let nature takes it course, and hope it didnt take. If it did, I would rather have puppies then mess with possible reproductive problems in the future.. Hoping it didnt take. good luck with whatever you decide. Maria

I recently spoke to my repro vet about clarification of the procedure. Now they do not give the immediate shot. You should ultrasound at 30 days and they give a medication that essentially tells the uterus to not sustain the pregnancy with progesterone. It causes an abortion but no harm to the female. I would contact a repro vet if your vet is not familiar with this procedure. There is a good chance at that time she was not fertile, especially with her age and the cycle timing. Hopefully you will be lucky and she did not take and all will be solved with the ultrasound being negative. Don't feel like an idiot but now you know he is very proactive in that department and have to make sure you keep him apart from females. If you want the number of my repro vet for your vet pm me.

Thanks

Thank you all for your replies. We've decided to take "Jazzy" at 30 days and do the ultrasound. After this we can make an intelligent decision on the outcome.

If this is the case, then you definitely should let her have the puppies. Terminating the pregnancy could have disasterous consequences for later down the road.

If she is that good, then presumably the dad is a decent dog too. So at worse, you'll end up with pups that will make decent hunting companions. While that's not something people should produce by design, it's not a disaster when an accident like this happens.
