What causes a dam to reabsorb her puppies? How common is it? I know there are many factors here, but was wondering what some of your first hand experiences have been.

I had a deposit on a very nice litter of Chesapeakes and she ended up absorbing her puppies. If the breeding was repeated, what is the likelyhood of it happening again?

What I do know is the dam's bloodwork came back fine and her progesterine levels were checked prior to breeding.

How did they know she was carrying puppies for sure?

Ultrasound, blood test ???

At what day into her pregnacy do they feel she lost the puppies?

No ultrasound. They went to a specialist and did some tests. The specialist said she lost the puppies around 1 month.

I've had it happen and it's not rare. Mine was just before 30 days and confirmed on US. There can be many reasons, but like in humans, many pregnancies don't don't maintain, usually because progesterone levels fall off, but it could also be for other reasons like the uterine wall being not 100%. It does not mean it will happen again, but in my case mine never took again. The first thing to do would be a thyroid panel.

You also want to look at the age of the bitch.
The older they are the less chance of conceiving.
Most older bitches have ovarian cysts which can keep them from
conceiving.
Sometimes stress can cause them to absorb.....
Has she had a litter before ? Was this a natural breeding or AI.....??
There are many factors to take into consideration....

She is 5 and 4 mos. She has had one previous litter that produced 5 pups. I think it was an AI breeding. I know they did a sperm count as well.

IMHO you have a much better chance of puppies if you do a natural breeding.....especially at 5 plus years and over.

With AI's the timing has to be very precise.....using progestrone testing,
LH surge tests, and cytology will all help achieve the perfect time.
For the investment involved, just doing progestrone is not good enuff.
If she were my bitch and I choose to breed again, I would only consider natural....
OR a surgical AI so that when the vet does the implant, he can check for
cysts and pop them if need be.

Hope that helps....

They started from just about nothing. Everything that goes into making up a puppy had to be (absorbed) digested at one time by mom. When they are absorbed back into her body its reabsorb as they were absorbed the first time as raw materials to make a puppy.
