FT judging scenario

11471 Views 131 Replies 35 Participants Last post by  Peter Balzer
You are one of the two judges. Contestant calls for birds. After the first bird hits the ground you can plainly hear the contestant say "sit" to their dog. Your co judge does not hear anything.
For this scenario let's say the other two birds hit the ground and the contestant gets their number from the judge who did not hear anything.
You were the judge that did hear contestant talk to the dog.
What do you do?

Steve, I think they are applying this to after the handler calls for the birds and before a release has been given. See what happens when you breathe the air from the Salton Sea? :)

Jeff
Is it critical to tell the handler he made this mistake prior to picking up the memory birds? Or can you just let him pick up the birds and then inform them?
I see nothing in the rule that says a hat is illegal. What makes you think is is?
\May be some think it is a training aid

Probably, that's why I ask about gloves and white coats. I ran a trial last weekend and I don't think I saw a single handler that didn't have at least two of those three items.

My take which isn’t worth much is that if you have to wave your hat to get your dog to cast you might have problems 😉

Or you wore the wrong colored coat to the line...... I think black gloves are useless. A black hat, much larger than most hands.

Do you mean this color? Black gloves aren’t worthless and they are much cooler than waving you cap in the air.

EdA, I know an individual that wore this as a color of choice to handle with. Swore the dogs could see this better than white.

Tim West wore it on our circuit but thankfully from a fashion standpoint the trend never caught on. Given the dog’s lack of visual color definition there might be something to it, perhaps it appears brighter than white. Possibly risking the ridicule of my fellow competitors I think I will try it since it is more fashionable with the LL Bean logo.
Update, just ordered, I will report Jumbo and Che’s opinion after wearing it in various light conditions.

If you wear it to Metro we're gonna make fun of you.

I suspect that how shiny the fabric is has more to do with it than color. I know some swear that their dogs can see orange but I have never seen evidence of it.
I know my dogs can pick out a shiny new orange bumper from a considerable distance when it is sunny and have to hunt for the same if it is cloudy.

It will remain as a training experiment until such time it is evident that I can gain a minute competitive advantage

I wear lime green when sun is behind or above me. It works!

Brooks, I'm guessing you may be referring to Tom Bogusky.
Tom was adamant that he felt the bright greenish yellow color offer the dog better visibility particularly in dim lighting conditions.
We were running a trial in Wichita Falls many years ago and it was getting dark and the judges offered the last few handlers the option of running the landline that evening or the next morning.
Tom and Lynn Dubose both ran it that evening. Lynn in traditional white and Tom and his ugly greenish shirt. Tom's dog seem to find him without a problem where as Lynn's dog did seem to struggle finding her.
May have been the color or may have been the fact that Tom offered about three times a target size for the dog to find then Lynn did😉😊

You have one heck of a memory, that would be MANY MANY years ago and I have no recollection of the DuBoses ever running our circuit….🤔
and Tom is big enough that any color would show up better on him 😉
How many of you have judged Lauren Hays? More times than not she is always bent over her dogs head, do you think she has ever whispered, real soft sssiiiiiiitttttttttttt?

How many have judged, the professor of the foot slide, Mr. Danny Farmer. BTW, I love Danny, none better.

No one has a problem tossing a nobody. Very few have the stones to toss a somebody.

Actually I was talking about Bobby Smith. He is also a big target.

Never seen or heard about a nobody being tossed for either one.
