I attended my first field trial today, I wasn't running a dog, just watching. As someone who is fairly new to dogs and only done HRC and a little AKC HTs, WOW! What these dogs really can do is absolutley amazing. I talked to several people, everyone was extemely nice and answered every question I had and I got some great advice. My question is, why are all birds hand thrown and not by a winger? You could see that the bb's were starting to get tired and the throws weren't quite what they were at the beginning.

The throw from a winger can be hard for a dog to see

They aren't illegal, you will see wingers at field trials now and then.

When wingers are used, I instruct the bird boys to use a throwing motion when they launch the bird. But, they often forget, particularly at the end of a long day
