Retired Marine Adopts Dog She Spent Two Tours With
Following a high-profile campaign Former Marine Cpl. Megan Leavey will finally able to adopt the working dog who had completed over 100 missions with her during two six-month tours in Iraq.
Both Leavey and the dog, Rex, finished their deployment in 2006 and spent almost a year rehabilitating from the injuries they had suffered together. After Marine officials at Camp Pendleton kennel made the decision to retire the 10-year-old German shepherd due to facial paralysis that would interfere with bomb-sniffing abilities Leavey began the campaign to adopt her war-time companion.
"Rex is my partner; I love him," Leavey told MSNBC.com. "We have been through so much together... I've spent day and night with this dog. It's a very strong bond."
Marine officials explain that they were just following proper safety screening procedures to ensure that an unsuspecting sponsor does not adopt a dog with aggressive tendencies. One Monday, the Marine Corps announced that Rex is suitable adoption and that he will be reunited with Leavey as soon as the paperwork is complete.
