is there anything that can be given by a vet to bring a dog into heat. my female will be 3 in may and has only cycled once and that was 1 year and 5 months ago. her eyes are clear and her hips are good, so i would like to get some pups off of her.

thanks

Hi, I feel for you as I have the exact same problem with one of my females who also has all clearances done(hips, elbows, eyes, CNM). Has only had 1 heat cycle and she will be 3 in the summer. Recently talked to another couple breeders and they said that they have had females recently that have gone 2-3 years between cycles and then have come into heat. Good luck with your female.

Hey...I used cabergoline to bring my bitch into heat and she had 8 healthy puppies via frozen semen. She has cycled normally since then. I passed on the info to two other people and they also both had successes.
I did my homework on it. This is what Dr. Hutchinson had to say...it sums it up nicely.

Question: how does cabergoline work and what specifically does it do?

Dr. Hutch:

Cabergoline is the new "wonder drug" that we're using to induce bitches into ovulatory heat cycles. The drug is what as known as an anti-prolactin drug. After the bitch ovulates the body maintains the progesterone for two months it is prolactin that keeps her from cycling right away and is why the bitch's interval between cycles is 6-7 months. Since we don't know exactly what makes a bitch come into season we looked at it from the end of what prevents a bitch from coming into season. By taking out the prolactin, using cabergoline, the bitch will come into a cycle on her own. It is NOT an artificial cycle. We've done nothing to hormonally manipulate it. We've just removed the stopper. Cabergoline is an oral product used once a day for 10 days. Usually the bitch comes in within 2-3 weeks. It is a very safe drug with minimal side effects but it is a human drug and can be relatively pricey. A couple hundred dollars. It was mentioned in one of the recent AKC Gazettes. It is NOT an experimental drug as was said in the Gazette. Where I'm using it is on bitches that have not cycled within 12 months or I'm using it more and more for convenience for my clients to have puppies when they want them. It takes a bitch 4 and a half months for the uterus to get over the previous heat cycle so we can use cabergoline any time after 4 and a half months since the previous cycle. Follow our progesterone, breed her and expect to have puppies! It is NOT successful for bringing bitches into a first heat cycle.

Dr Greer in Lomira, who refers to Dr Hutch, did a study and something like 29 bitches were pushed into heat and they had bigger litters than expected. I believe only a couple didn't take, however, I would do a blood work-up and thyroid panel. I have not used it but it is pricey. Other non-chemical ways to get them to come into heat are to kennel them with bitches in heat and put some weight on them.

Same deal for me. My Cosmo bitch just turned 4, and has had only one heat. She is a "kennel pacer". Very little rest time for this bitch. I have heard that this may affect heat cycles. Might this be true???

Well, after I posted last night about my 3 year old female that has only had one heat cycle. I checked her this morning like I go every day and Voila she was in heat. She is always put beside our own females when they are in heat and nothing happens. Well, last week we had an outside female here for breeding and I put the dog beside her and that must have done the trick because today our female is in heat. I am so happy!!!

I have heard and experienced (not me but friends) that heavy physical training in women can mess up their cycle. I wonder if it is the same in bitches.

thanks for all the great info. i have already tried kenneling her with another bitch that was in heat and that did'nt work. i have also tried not working her for around 2 months with just light exercise each day and that has not seemed to have worked either. i guess the results from the blood work and thyroid check will determine my next step. hopefully none will be necessary. thanks again

I have a female who will turn 3 in April and she has not cycled yet. I also kept a female out of the second breeding who will turn 2 in April and she has not cycled yet either. I've tried givng them time off from training, extra food, putting them in kennel next to a female in heat etc. Any tips/suggestions?

Thank you

Time to go to a repro vet. My friend had a female that never cycled at 3 yrs and the repro vet said maybe ultrasound her to see if she has ovaries. She elected to spay and place her-she had juvenile ovaries-they never developed. The reason you send the thyroid to Michigan State is they do an entire panel of thyroid tests and not just a screening test.

A male dog being around, kennel with a bitch that is in season, put some pounds on the bitch and crating the bitch with limit training time will help. I had a friend one time ask to use my stud dog just to sent up his kennel. He had some bitches that where not coming in. A week with my dog being around his kennel did the trick.

Give it a try if you have not already.

Shes been around at least one male dog daily and multiple times each day. I've tried all the others ideas. Maybe your male has a 'magic wand' (pun intended).

We just induced one of our girls into season using Estrogen... she is due the beginning of April and has got QUITE a belly on her already.

We did a blood panel and thyroid panel sent to Michigan State before opting to induce her. She is 4 1/2 and has only had one heat cycle 2 years ago.
