The ones from Dog's Afield are very nice. I recent obtained an Avery one and like it alot too but it does pack a bit more wallup so be careful.

I've had several from Jewell Easter. I wish I didn't loose them. They aren't to whippy and have a good handle on them. I prefer one about 30.5". I'm only 5' 8" tall so taller people would want a longer one and shorter people a shorter one. One size doesn't fit all.

It is easy to make your own:

1 fiberglass bicycle flag - cut to length you want.

1/4 inch nylon rope - thread the fiberglass rod through the middle

Use a propane torch to heat shrink the rope tight around the rod.

trim the rope ends and coat with tool dip.

To be extra fancy - only tool dip one end and glue a golf club grip to the other.

Made Mine too

Them Dogs Afield rubber ones are too flimsy....and break way too easy so I made a couple out of a Marine CB antenae for a core and used I think 3/8 braided nylon rope with the core removed... a Pro-Wrap golf grip...(get the proper tape to put it on with)....and a 45 cal shell casing as a end protector...coated the casing in black silicone.

I got 2 sticks out of one antenae....one a bit softer than the other...

When I first started I used 3' bamboo plant stakes which too often broke. Then I started using the bicycle flags. I wrapped them with a foam tape about 1/4" thick and then wrapped the the foam tape with electrical tape. If I could get colored tape red or yellow to increase visibility. Every truck I sold must have had one left behind so new ones were always to replace lost sticks.

I do not like the one I got from dogs afield. The first day I got it, I was kind of shaking it (like you would with a Fly rod to check for stiffness) and it broke. I never even swatted a dog or anything first. It broke about 10 inches up from the tip. The covering keeps it together. I do still use it cause I haven't taken the time to buy or make a new one. Overall I think it is too flimsy too.

I never contacted Dogs afield but, should have cause with their great service I am sure they would have taken care of me and made it right but, it wasn't worth the trouble of mailing it back and going through all that.

I am now going to make one similar to the description Gerard just gave. Sounds good. Travis

Ultimate Heeling Stick

In regard to the nylon wrapped type of heeling sticks, after going through nearly a half dozen of them over the years I came to the same conclusion as Travis and Lpgar. I don’t like them. The fiberglass rods enclosed within the woven nylon sheath would too quickly have multiple lengthwise splits much like a bamboo rattlestick. They then provided very little correction and were more like a wet noodle. My favorite heeling stick was the Invisi-Stick which was sold by Dogs Afield several years ago but, is no longer available. Because of that I began manufacturing them myself.

I use a clear Lexan rod. Lexan is a new generation of super-tough polycarbonate, durable often to the point of being "bulletproof." Lexan is typically used in the aerospace industry for items such as aircraft canopies. I had trim foam grip handles custom molded. They are comfortable yet easily slide into your back pocket. This grip also lets you more easily hold your heeling stick and electronic collar transmitter in the same hand. They are as flexible as the nylon wrapped heeling sticks but much more durable. Like Howard, most folks really like the 30” length but, I will make them in any custom length requested.
