Hey a friend of mine son was drafted by the phillies in the 3rd round yesterday. When drafted that high is there a mininmaul signining bonus? He also received a Full ride to the Univ. of Texas to play for Auggie but I bet he wont turn down the money to play pro ball and get some of that signing bonus money. He was saying it will be over a million but I figured that might just be first 2 rounds or so.

Wow 3rd round and being the 107th pick overall is great. Congrats to the Philadelphia and Brandon Workman, {RHP, Bowie (Texas) HS}. As far as the Signing bonus, maybe ? But I know that he will have school payed for after his baseball carrer is over. I hope has a healthy and productive carrer.

I had two friends get drafted a few years ago. (they were both originally drafted out of high school in very late rounds and turned that down to play in College. One played for Kansas and the other played for Wichita state.) After college one was drafted in the fourth round by the Cardinals and got around $225K signing bonus. He was rated very highly within their system and he and they had very high hopes for a bright future. He suffered a wrist injury and never could quite get back to where he needed to be. The other was drafted very late and got around $10k.

Another one I know of from BYU was drafted by the Royals in the third round a few years ago and his signing bonus was $475K.

None of thes three are still playing unfortunately. These three were all the very top in high school and very very good in college. It goes to show how tough it is to make it in pro sports.

On a side note, Prince Fielder was drafted in the first round (big signing bonus - I think almost two million) a few years ago and started out his career here in Ogden Utah playing for te Ogden Raptors. He is now I believe leading the big leagues in home runs.

I knew Prince when he was younger. He lived in Cotton wood Valley in las Colinas and we lived there to and I used to go to his house.

Brandon Workman is a pretty dang good player and averages just over 2 K's an inning and throw mid 90's( 94-95)Good change up and average curve.

A kid from my home town was drafted out of highschool in the first round by the Dodgers three years ago and he got 1.25 million! I'm sure 3rd round money is pretty good but just don't know how much. If Boras was his agent, may be 10 million but might not play for two years!!!

According to http://baseballanalysts.com/, the "slot money" for the 100th pick in the draft is $385,000.

Note that the "slot" is just a baseline guide of the worth of a player taken with a particular draft pick. A player might get more (or less) since other things besides their talent will play a role in where a player is selected. For example, if a player has Scott Boras as your agent, a player might slip to a lower position in the draft (because teams don't like dealing with Boras), but will often sign for "above slot" money. Another example would be how committed the player seems to be to goto their chosen college (a player who is very committed would likely also slip in the draft to a lower position).

More than you probably wanted to know regards,

When a drafted player agrees in principle to a contract amount, it must be approaved by the comissioners office.

As CBarnes said, there is a slot. So let's say a third round pick agreed to a million dollar contract...........most likely the comissioner's office would reject it as it is an unusual amount for that round.

Reason being, this keeps the foul play out of the draft. Example, the Yankess really like a projected first round pick. Prior to the draft, the Yankees agree to a signing bonus which is very beneficial to the player. The club and player come up with a plan to let it be known he is not interested in turning pro and will attend a college.

So, all the clubs pass on this projected first rounder and he slips to the third round. Of coarse, he gets drafted by the Yankees  . Now the contract that goes to office is for first round money. This is why it would get rejected you see?

Also, I believe MLB is tring to keep these signing bonuses somewhat realistic. If that can happen.

Regardless fowldaddy, if your friend was drafted in the third round out of high school, he must be a very talented pitcher. Good luck to him and his future. Just let him know there is a slight difference between 3A HS baseball and professional baseball.
