No cut off for Junior - but, our club will usually split if it gets up to numbers like that (80)....

Ron,
The judges will keep the dogs moving. Cindy does a great job. The main thing that slows the Juniors down is poor dog work and the pros who have to be in two places at once. In our region we have quite a few pros who run a half dozen or more dogs in the Master and another half dozen in the Juniors.
Word of advice for you, try and not wait in line for a half hour to run. In the past it's not be uncommon to wait for a very long time. Especially if you have a Golden in front of you..............Just kidding. Good Luck

WOW! Where was that?

I was thinking around 70...

I don't think so... It's been a while but I remember looking at the entry numbers at the time and thinking.... How are we going to get this done.... Eighty something dogs,,,, wow! If you wanna check Kristie and get the exact number, it was the Greater Pittsburgh Golden Retriever club some 6 years ago in the spring.

Well, with entries just closed at 82 in Junior, they just posted that there will be Junior A and Junior B, with the judges for Junior B as TBA (has anyone run under them before?).

So I guess that answers my question, at least in this case.

While it would have been interesting to see them try to get 82 juniors through, which still wouldn't have match Angie's record (unofficial, of course), I"m glad that I'll be running from a 41 dog field instead.

Norm, are you going (since it's practically in your backyard) or do you play a different game?

Cheers,

Glad they split for you.....good luck!

Oh and Angie, I looked it up....that test was in September of 2003 and you had were 64 starters according to AKC's web site. That is still a big number to run through depending on the time of year and when the sun rises and sets.

I ran 3 junior dogs in a Bryan-College Station test that had 79 starters in March of 2000, now that was a long test! and I believe they might have had more than that in 1998, but the AKC Web site doesn't go back that far yet. I remember standing in line in the almost dark waiting and someone joking about circling the dam with trucks to light the pond so we could finish the last few dogs.

October of 2002, BCSRC had 96 juniors and decided to split, that was the year my co-judge and I judged Junior B on Saturday and Junior A on Sunday in the pouring rain both days....we got 12 inches that weekend. We finished on Saturday just as the thunder started to rumble. Sunday was just more pouring rain and ankledeep mud where ever you walked. Now that was a test I'll never forget!

Largest test I personally judged was 61 starters, and that was Sooner in June so there was lots of daylight between sun rise and sun set. When a club askes what I'm comfortable with I usually answer around 50-ish give or take for the time of yearand the predicted weather.

So, How many Juniors can they reasonably run in a single hunt test? I'm entered in one next week that just hit 80.

Is there a number where they have to split it?

Thanks!
Don't worry Ron, they'll break it in two groups. Want me to diagram the tests for you? St Louis ponds, and the same judges again. Bet I can do it....

I'll take that bet wise guy.

You haven't seen the ponds since we spent an entire oven dried metric butt load of money on dozer and thrasher time in there. Absolutely beautiful!!!!! The Salem club (and others) have invested HEAVILY both in club member sweat (Glen Marttila, Dave Simon and Rick Breckel especially) and machinery time. With the cooperation of the ODFW have reclaimed ponds and fields that haven't been usable in 20 years. We spent around $8,000 on the machinery two years ago and then followed that up with an extensive sprayin program (two applications) and then another $8,500 this spring back with the machinery and chainsaws. The result is that while St. Louis Ponds was for a long time 3 tiny little splash pools and a couple of overgrown fields, it is now just magnificent. I'm sure there is a technical name for it, but the dozer that we used has a huge drum covered in nasty teeth that eats anything in it's path and mulches the residue to below ground level. Scary piece of equipment, but it can turn overgrown Hawthorn and alder thickets into pure prairie in minutes. Jim Davis donated several hundred pounds of grass seed and spent days broadcasting that in all the cleared areas.

Trust me, it now rivals ANYTHING in the northwet.

Now get back to heckling Marv regards

Before you get all cranked up on telling what the test will be- be advised that we are still looking for a multiple pointed Junior judge.

Here's your chance to REALLY know what the test will be regards

No, also laughing out loud, I can't be certain since I wasn't there, but that is how AKC has it recorded.

I've only seen one test there (last August) and the Jr. was in the field you drive past, just to the right of the parking lot entrance. Do you think that's where they'll run it again?

I was just out there yesterday and the grass in some of the fields is really getting up there. From the dog's perspective, you can't see anything; but I ran a bunch of marks and he nailed 'em, so he must be smarter than me (no surprise there).

I'll have to hook up with the Salem club folks to help with some of the sweat equity. That's a great place to run, and only 30 minutes away.

When they split the Jr. test like they have, do they typically run two completely different tests (since they have different judges) or do they start one half on the water and the other half on the land, and run the same test?

Cheers,
I'm out for this test. I've got a dog on the IR and puppy not due to arrive till August.
I have been spending quite bit of time (at least 4 times a week) there since it opened doing rehab water work. It's been nice that no one has been training most everyday I've been out. Yesterday there was a couple of guys working on the channel pond but no real competition for space. I'm surprised the FT crowd hasn't come to work the new tech water. It's up there with Sauvies now. The improvements have been nice. Now somebody needs to burn the piles of debris by the platform pond and kill the beaver who keeps falling trees.
I'd be willing to wager they run the same Junior test though. The new grounds will go to the Masters.

Usually we split the grounds in half and due the the various stages and different areas we have rennovated, there will be plenty of new areas available for all the stakes. I can't say wether the 2 Juniors will flip flop or not- generally we leave that decision to the judges. It's pretty tough to switch due to the differences in time required for a water series vs a land series.

Any dumb ass can diagram the a junior test even /Paul it goes like this:

Line--------------------------------------------------Mark

No worries, go get yer dawg.

Noobs that are willing to work are ALWAYS welcome- and dang hard to come by, look me up - I ain't hard to find usually.

See ya there regards

JH/St Louis Ponds

Well, shoot I was hoping to come over and volunteer to help. But I just found out I'll be going to Idaho to pick up my new pup  I was at the ponds about a month ago and it is really improved from when I lived in the valley and was able to go there more often to work. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one and help. Yeah, that beaver is a stinker! I always worry about those stubs he leaves sticking up from below the water for dogs with a flying entry. But he is part of the "real" scene too.
