Years ago there was an AKC HT club in central Missouri around the Columbia area. I believe it was called the Missouri River Retriever Club. As I understand it, the club held AKC licensed HTs but no FTs. The club ultimately went inactive.

My husband, Randy, and I would like to know if there is a way to re-activate that club since the paperwork should already be in place with AKC or somewhere. We want to be able to hold AKC FTs under this club's name, but would be willing to sponsor HTs if there was interest and participation from club members.

So here some early questions (I'm sure we'll have more as time goes on) . . .

1. Are there any FT or HT people here who would be interested in helping us get this "new" old club back in business?

2. What should we do to get the process started?

3. Who should we contact at AKC?

Greg Bell (Sedalia) might be able to help you out. He is president of the Mid-Mo. HRC club. I think he knows of the history of the old club in the area.

If it's the club I'm thinking of, they ran tests at the Finger lake area just North of Columbia.

Randy and Susan Case from near Jefferson City (I think Holts Summit) were big in it. Don Howser from West of Jeff. City was also involved.

A little trivia, but, I think that Bobby George was also in the club. This is when he co-authored a book with Cotton.

AKC will probably fast track you to have FTs and/or HTs if the new club members are experienced. Talk to Bill or Jerry.

Good Luck

Well, I'm a couple of hours away from there, but I'd be glad to help in any way that I can. I know that people would come to any HT's and FT's held there...there are a lot of competitive retriever people in and around Kansas City.

Interesting history I didn't know about. It's been 10 years since I joined the Midway HRC club in Columbia and I believe they'd been in existence for 2-3 years prior. I never heard the original guys mention anything about the old club, I'm relatively sure the HRC club started from scratch.

We are actually in the process of deciding whether or not to pursue an AKC club in conjunction with the HRC club. There are several individuals that are interested in having both, the main concern being that we are like a lot of clubs where the same 10-15 people do the vast majority of the workout...burnout has been mentioned most.

One of our club members has already looked into what it takes and where we need to start. I can guarantee he didn't know about an old club that was in place. This is something that can get a head of steam quickly. You might call Jeff Gumminger at 573-442-9212 or shoot me a PM.

Thanks for all the info and leads on who to contact at AKC.

Yes, Bobby George was a member of that club and I have already talked with him and he also said to try and track down the Case's as a starting point. That was the club that held tests at Finger Lakes, but the "new" club would move its tests/hunts to Whetstone Creek Wildlife Area and properties near Williamsburg.

I am almost 100% sure that the current Midway HRC club in the Columbia area was created from scratch and not an offshoot of the Missouri River AKC club, but if there is support from Midway members for another club in the area, we're off to a good start.

I have printed out all the information and will pursue the matter further and keep you all updated if - no, WHEN - we can reactivate the old club. At that time we will call for a "re"organizational meeting and I will be contacting those of you who expressed an interest so we can really get the ball rolling.

Again, thanks.

Contact the Jacksonville club. They just started up their hunt tests again after about a 6 year lay off.
