There have been quite a few threads about hunt test judging recently. Right now I have two dogs. One is in training for field trials. The other will never be a FT dog, but he is a pretty well trained hunting dog. I'm thinking of running him in some senior and maybe master hunt tests this summer to get the handling experience before I start trying to run my other dog in trials.

Right now I'm reading "Retriever Field Trial Judging - A Manual." It's great reading, but since i MAY be running some hunt tests this summer I'm wondering if there is a similar publication for hunt test judging. I know that AKC has judging seminars. I'm not sure if I'm ready to make the commitment to a seminar, but I'd like to have an idea of where the judges are coming from prior to running. I searched the AKC website and didn't come up with anything from them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Go to the AKC Judging seminar.

Talk with experienced judges.

Apprentice at Junior, Senior, and Master. Compare notes with each judge and ask LOTS of questions.

Go to NFHRA.org and look at our April Informal. Best $10.00 you will ever spend

I take it you're taking about the informal HT in April? I do run the hunter's stake at my Field Trial Club and may start entering him in our club's qualifying stake this coming weekend.

However, the "Super Singles" competition looks VERY INTERESTING. I feel he can mark singles with any master dog, but I would be limited to the "Hunter" division because of his lack of qualifications for "Advanced." I will have to talk to some friends and see if I can get a group interested in making the 4 hour trip. The only snag, I might be hosting an informal test that weekend myself... :?

Thanks for the heads up... :D

Buzz, you can enter him "up" just not down a class. Trying to include as many dogs as possible. The HT is an AKC format. Make a few calls and come o down. Last year was a blast.

Just go run and when you screw up, you'll learn the rules REALLY fast! LOL

The rulebook is online, but there are also some great websites (several, but none off top of my head, maybe someone else has them) that summarize what's required.

Is there anything in particular you're mainly concerned about? Which level are you starting at?

Keep in mind, each judge interprets the rulebook his own way... Some may have a completely bizarre interpretation.
