I was just wondering, when a person has never judged before, and they are brand new, got talked into taking the test or apprenticing, asked to judge, then what happens? You go out with the "senior" judge and then what?

I got asked to judge a senior test at the end of summer and now I am seriously regretting saying yes, and I still have to apprentice...

I am going to feel like a complete idiot and probably won't remember anything I have already learned. Everyone will know it is my first time.

Do the major judges LIKE teaching someone to judge?

Mary, deep breath and relax. Most senior judges I know like taking a new judge under their wing. My advice is this. Read the rules a hundred times. Meditate on your experience training dogs so far and the qualities you train for. think about how you like to be treated by the judges when your run and then strive to portray those qualities. Stay fairly conservative at first until you gain more experience. Keep a level head and a sense of humor. If in doubt, do the right thing. Have fun....

I can't help you with any words of wisdom when it comes to judging, but i'll be doing my best to try and figure out whose controlling the keys to the internet bus........you know.....just in case.

Whatever you do Mary, do not apprentice under /Paul. He gets extremely literal. But his "Have fun" advice is sincere, so by all means.

Seriously, just apply the rules you've learned, look at the set up and ask yourself, "would I like to run this test?" If so, probably everyone else will, and y'all will have fun.

I asked about this once and got no reply. Is there anything similar to the manual for judging field trials for HT? I know there is a seminar, but is there anything printed for us folks that like to read too?

Was that a full back, half back, bare back or baby back? Only a good discussion between two judges can figure it out....

Not sure if AKC has developed a seminar manual similar to the HRC "book". It is handy to have some reference material for the hunt tests as well.

But I will say, the AKC regulations booklet is far more encompassing than the one used by HRC, so their seminar manual is almost a must addition for a beginning apprentice.

THANKS FOR JUMPING OFF THAT CLIFF! :D although i probably will never be under judgement by you

i would urge you to go to the HRC website and read "the judge's code of ethics", even though you're starting out with an AKC event.

good luck! everyone starts at zero judging.don't let that bother you. watch, ask, grow!

Down here in the lower 48, it is not neccessary to go out with any judges. (Shayne and Guthrie are prime examples of why this unwritten rule is in place). But if you do so choose .... what happens at the field trial stays at the field trial!

I filed an extension last year and haven't done them for 05 yet. I am filing another extension today (maybe tomorrow, no need to rush) for 06. Wish me luck!
I hope someone doesn't mind that there is GDG in their thread! Of course after their date with their senior judge they will probably be so infatuated that they won't even notice!

Does senior mean more experienced or older ... or both?

Senior regards,

In her case, it means 'intermediate'...and I know how you enjoy those situations...candle light, glass of wine, sweet nothings etc.

But that /Paul might have the inside track, because he's been known to travel hundreds of miles just for the possibility of getting into a green jello congoblation.

Heaven forbid if the UIM was only in his 50's hearing about this. He'd be ona plane to AK in a NYM eh? heh heh heh heh.

WHAT?! I don't love candles unless it's to cover up the smell of wet DOGS in the house! Sweet nothings?! I am sweet enough without having some "nothing" tossed my way..

Taxes? Well, I gotta file an extension also just like every year. I went training instead. 8)

Senior judges? Well, if they have a cane, I'll take em! What I will do with them is a secret.........

As far as the serious answers, I will have fun 4 certain. I just hate the whole New Person BS! I will feel like a beginning JH handler again which I shall despise....

S'pose I'll have to wait all night for you to answer this, eh Toscanini?

As long as she used my initials, I should reply, but I'm not very good at being that intermediate, like you and ol' Jer are. Must run in yer family.

Bubba told me I was more the type to matriculate, and I'm trying hard to live up to that.

/Paul thinks I'd appreciate a good rasslin' match, but he's got me confused with thet Gooser dude. But I can sure get into tasting some of thet green jello.

But my advice to the King of the Camp is to not take any crap from those Griz wrestlers, regardless of the size of dog they are running.

UB...thinking my advice may have been redundant. We'll still be needin' those pictures, Howard.
