For those interested in hunt tests, field trials, and field work for hunting retrievers.
Improving handling skills on marks and blinds:
Research, planning and execution
This seminar focuses on developing essential handling skills that will be useful in training, and instrumental in your success at hunt tests and field trials.
After a brief overview, Pat will present a series of set-ups featuring a variety of training and handling challenges. Key elements in the test situations will be discussed and a variety of approaches will be offered before handlers run their dogs on the set-up. Pat will provide comments, suggestions, and a critique of each run.
Specific topics to be addressed:
? How to work the line to your advantage.
? Overcoming cover challenges.
? The best path from the holding blind to the line.
? How to point out the marks and the order of the throws to set your dog up for success.
? How to handle walk-ups.
? How to handle honors
? How to determine what order to pick up multiple marks.
? When to handle on marks in a trial or a test ? and how these situations differ from handling on marks in training.
? Dealing with no-birds.
? When to put your dog in the water for angle entries on water marks.
? How to identify and approach the objectives and hazards on a blind.
? Finding the acceptable corridor of travel on blinds of varying complexity.
? How to deal with poison birds on marks and blinds.
? When to handle on a cross wind blind.
