Need some advise from the forum's knowledge base. I have a bitch who just had an invasive cancerous mast cell tumor removed from her chest. It grew while she was welping her last litter. Since then she has not shown any sign of it. Is this type of tumor more likely to reoccur if she is bred again? Does pregnancy increase the liklyhood of this type of cancer? Thanks in advancce;

How long has it been since the surgery? I lost my 9 year old BLM a couple of years ago to this. His tumor was on his eyelid. As soon as he healed from the surgery, and he looked all bright and well again, the tumor immediately reappeared. In his case I believe because of the location they were not able to excise enough tissue to get rid of it, and within weeks it had spread to lymphnodes. I do not know relationship to pregnancy, but what is key is how much tissue was removed and if enough time has passsed to be sure it does not come right back. I've known of other dogs who had a mast cell tumor removed from a leg or belly, where they were fine and never had a recurrence. I hope for the very best outcome foy you and your girl.

I lost a 3 yo BLM to this 3 years ago - started off looking innocuous - just looked like skin tags - (nevae) - by the time there was a good diagnosis of it it was in stage 3 - he only lasted about 9 months after diagnosis; d/t the spread surgical sexcision was not an option. If they can get a good 3 CM margin around the tumor there i a good possibility that it won't recur...

Also not sure of pregnancy connection ...

hoping you do well regards...

Lost my 14 yr old lab Calvin to a mast cell tumor within 10 weeks of surgery. The tumor was on his neck. Have to admit those last 10 weeks he really enjoyed his life. He was like a puppy once again. Grade 3 report.

He was a wonderful friend and kind soul

Here is a link:

My Kate had a mast cell tumor at the base of the tail. Surgery seemed to have removed it all, but it did come back. The link will give you a better idea as to what you're dealing with, but it sounds as though some folks here have had good outcomes.

Very best of luck with your dog-

Our Austin had a level 2 osto sarcoma which is a mast cell.
removed the rear leg, did 10 chemo treatments and that was 2 years ago March 1. The boy runs strong ( and I would do it again).

FWIW, an osteosarcoma is not a mast cell tumor. Often the horror mast cell stories involve high grade II and grade III mast cells. With good extensive margins the others are generally cured by surgical removal.

There are 3 grades of Mast Cell Tumors. Grade 1 being the least grade and 3 being the most sever. You do need to have them excised and sent in for histopath. That is the only way to know what grade they are and if the excision is complete. Grade 1 and 2 are curative with complete excision. Grade 3 is not curative with surgery and even with complete excision may have a chance of coming back and spreading. If it came back at grade 3 you can have chemtherapy done to hopefully prevent the spread of it. Mast cells are skin tumors and have nothing to do with pregnancy. If it was a low grade tumor I woudn't worry much and I would just keep an eye out for any new lumps that appear and have them aspirated asap to see what they are.

My 9 year old chessie has had mast cells removed. She had 13 removed in 2 surgery's 2 weeks apart. I had one nickle size lump removed and then next to it there was a faint what they call plaque area and we removed that to see if it was anything and it came back as a mast cell so I had to have her put under again and took the rest off. Once we started shaving her we found many plaque area's over her body. The nickle one was a grade 3 with complete excision and a couple were grade 2 and most were grade 1. That was done last summer and there has been no more signs of them.

Good luck with your dog.
