I want to tell you folks something... this National is going to be pretty emotional for me. It's just up the road from Newbern Alabama. My dad died a few years ago, and asked that his ashes be spread in the church yard at the Methodist church there.

Going back to the Civil War, his great grand dad was the preacher there. And his Grandfather was as well. Their ministries spanned over a hundred years. I went there in 1996 when my dad and brother and I took a cross-country bicycle trip. I can still see him with his bike cleats on, wearing those black bike shorts... (what would his granddaddy have thought!) standing there and reading those headstones.

Well... we live way out here. And there's never been a good time. I don't know if we can make the National a family thing. Probably not. But just knowing I'm up the road from where he wants to be... it will be pretty emotional. He grew up in Montgomery... so I'm from real Alabamian stock.

Anyhow... my little gal is running really well. She's on a roll and it's early in the season. So if she stays healthy and I don't run out of money, we're probably going to qualify. It was with that in mind that I pulled up a map to look at the surrounding area and realized the significance of Hale County to my family.

But leaving that aside... I was curious...

There are going to be thousands of people coming. The whole population of Greensboro is probably under 3000. How will we all get housed??? Do I need to contact a place in Tuscaloosa and reserve a room NOW?

now tim, why would you assume someone from "true alabama" stock would not want to be in tuscaloosa for home coming weekend? lol. you may be right, with dad being from montgomery 1tulip is probably and auburn fan;)

tulip, if the church is still active, call the church, tell them the comon history of your family's and the church's and explain your dad's wishes. the good hale county methodists might find you places to stay, assist your family with plans for a small memorial service and probably even have the church ladies do a meal at the "fellowship hall"(or better yet "on the ground") following the service.

This is correct. Homecoming is the Mississippi State Game on the 27th, so things will be pretty crazy in Tuscaloosa that week.

In addition to Tuscaloosa and Demopolis, there's Selma and even Montgomery/Prattville (2 hours roughly). Even these will have game attendees.

There are a lot of motel rooms that will already be booked up and some motels will have rooms available until Thurs before the game and then you'll have to vacate the room.

The story is that the implication of this w/e being a home game for Alabama was pointed out to the MN board some months ago but they said they'd not re-schedule. Guess they think they're bigger than an Alabama game. <snicker>

Moral: Book now if you'd like to attend. You can always cancel if your dog doesn't make the cut-off.
