I know that this has been discussed but I can't find it when I search...can anyone help?

Also, does anyone know which dogs threw pups with a little white on their feet or a blaze either on chest or elsewhere? I've heard of the term "salty paws" but am not familiar with labs that threw it other than "Bolo"...

Thanks,
Nancy

Nancy the little white spots in that hollow behind the foot is what I've heard called Bolo Spots.

I have a book, The Labrador Retriever - The History - The People - Revised by Richard Wolters, that shows pictures of the last two known Newfoundland Water Dogs. These dogs both carry a lot of white spots - chest, neck, front of feet, etc... This is thought to be one of the type of dogs that was taken to England to start the Labrador lines.

Mary Roslin Williams also talks about white mismarks on black Labs in one of her books and has a phot. The Labs looked almost like inverse Dalmatians.

I personally don't consider the bolo spots to be mismarks..... they are so common in certain lines of field bred labradors....... and since they're not being bred for the bench.....

Very interesting............ I enjoyed looking at the link.

Am I right to assume this is a disqualification?

I am not breeding or thinking of breeding for a bench dog. ( I am however having my MH level male neutered because of bad hips. ) Isn't it wrong to register on of these guys?

Will this coloration trait be passed on?

Is this the picture you were referring to?

I was at a field trial watching some friends run thier dog at DesPlaines,Il a long time ago and was walking around with my new young pup(Tracker). My dog had about 10 white hairs on his chest and a little white behind his feet.Barely noticeable.A guy offered to buy him on the spot.I asked him why he was so interested in him and he said it was because of his white spots. Then he showed me all the dogs in his truck and they all had white spots, sripes,or stars on thier chest. He said he always had the best luck with those dogs.I kept my dog.He turned out to be truly a once in a lifetime dog.He lived just shy of 16 years and was so easy to work with.(I just hunted with him but we hunted everything together). He's the dog I always hope for again.Since then,I've always wondered if there was something special about those little white spots.

White feet

I have a Lean Mac son X QAA female that is out of FC-AFC Shadow X FC-AFC Girlie. All four of his feet on the bottom are white. When he runs or walks, you can see them. They are not absurdly big spots, but very noticable. One of my training partners has a Lean Mac granddaughter X FC-AFC Shadow that has the same white spots. Another pup that I raised for a guy that is out of NFC-AFC Patton X QAA Eba female also has these white spots. I've asked several people and heard several differant answers as to where this comes from. There are at least 2 close common ancestors in all three of the pups that I have mentioned. Lean Mac and Shadow. Don't know if this is where it is coming from or not, but these are the common denominators. A little side note though, all three of these pups are phenomonal.... .

The white "bolo's" (a true bolo, not just a few white hairs) by the pasturns are normally indicative of the dog carrying the yellow gene.

My uncle also would only want black dogs with bolo's. He told me at a very young age, they will be the BEST dogs you'll have.

LeAnne, This thread had me running about checking all my dogs feet. LOL. No white on Yanks feet. Plenty on his head, as he injures himself.

My other two blacks, like you, without scientific evidence both who are black but carry yellow have a little white on their paws.

I guess this is kind of crossing threads here but I was reading the debate about the show dogs vs. field dogs in thread about Westminster Labs and SueLab brought up Shamrock Acres Light Brigade. This thread got me to pull out Trackers pedigree(my favorite hunting dog above). His sire was Special Occasion Tug o War whose pedigree included almost all yellow show dogs(Including Shamrock Acres Light Brigade). There were no field dogs that I can see on either the sire or dams side.Tracker was stocky but not much more than my dog now in fact going through old pictures it's amazing how much alike they look.(You can see him in photo gallery on Working Retriever Centrals site,LimitTracker of Sturbridge).I guess this adds to the yellow in the bolo spots idea and shows also that show dogs had a little hunt in them too.Tracker was born in 1986.Maybe the show dogs have changed since then.

I too owned a descendent of Shamrock Acres Light Brigade. He was purchased as a hunting dog and was really smart.

I just read the history of the Shamrock Acres Kennel. Some pretty interesting names pop up in regard to field work and Dual Champions...one of which is Judy Aycock.

The kennel has been breeding labs since 1957. I'm sure that the appearance of their breeding stock has changed over the years but just taking a peek at the dams and sires, they just don't look like many of the overdone specimens that we were discussing.

Regarding white on paws, neither of my females have white on their paws but both carry yellow and one also carries choco...

The bolo's that where produced in my blacks (back then) came from River Oaks Way Da Go Rocky; Westwind's Pedro; NFC Cropper; NFC Eba; as well as line bred Super Powder and especially River Oaks Corky line.

My "Rose" doesn't have bolo's nor does she produce them in her pups. She does carry the yellow gene. But, she isn't from any of the line's above either..not specifically anyway..

Your not the only one :p One of the first things I look for in a new litter of pups. I have never thought of bolo's as a "bad thing", quite the contrary.
