I am beginning to wonder if I will survive teaching my kids to drive.
I am currently teaching 3 of mine... Andrew is 17 and didn't have any desire to drive until his sister started driving. Now, he wants his license yesterday. Katie is 15. She'll be 16 in August and says she will have her license on her birthday.
Emma just got her permit in December. (Go figure, she's the best driver in the bunch.)

Please, someone just shoot me now... I just called the insurance company for a quote for a 17 year old boy.

P.S. After I finish getting these 3 through the process, I still have a 12 1/2 year old waiting in the wings......

Does anyone have any advice for me??? (Other than getting an old beater for the kids to drive.) They are learning to drive in my Excursion and it is a heart attack a minute!

Well, it's too late for birth control :p .

With my two, the house rule was that I paid their insurance until they did something that would make it worse such as getting a ticket or having an accident. If either occurred, they were on their own for insurance. The kids had their own car that they helped buy. That was cheaper than insuring them to drive mine. They were responsible for all gas and maintenance costs for their vehicle. Having my son work on an ambulance where he got to respond to calls involving kids he often knew helped also. My kids are now 33 and 25 and have never had a ticket or a serious accident (knock on wood).

I remember a Father from my childhood who bought a "junker", put it in the back yard. Then told his son that he could drive just as soon as he:

1. Got a job to pay for the parts.

2. Gained the knowledge to know which parts to buy.

Amazing how quickly that young man became employed part-time and learned to be a very good mechanic. :D :D

But in those days, insurance was not a requirement and the majority of people didn't have it. Plus there were only 1,000 people in the whole town.

Everyone got their license at 14 (some earlier under a "hardship") but we had all been driving since 10-11, even the Deputy Sheriff's daughters. I had a Commercial license at 15 and drove a fresh water truck for my older brother!!!

I would pull that truck up in front of a liquor store and buy beer!!!!

It was very easy to use an E-xacto knife to change the numbers on the license and wrap the entire thing with Scotch tape!!!

I have to daughters and the oldest was pretty easy to train she would listen but the youngest drove me nuts and scared the HE## out of me to the point I let her mother take over and just stayed home and repaired the damage when it happened

Wow!! Thats three more reasons to get off my bum and mail in my insurance renewal. The roads of North Pole will never be the same.

At least in the big rig I can spot them coming and get the heck out of the way.

Going to check my airbag regards

I can sympathize

I am also teaching my 15 and 1/2 year old to drive. He is catching on quick but his mother flatly refuses to take him out driving (that is probably a good thing).

My insurance company offers a discount for good grades (which thank God he has) and a discount for completing a defensive driving program called "adept driver." The course was $85 which considering the discount will be a bargain. You might want to ask your insurance company about any discounts because I can imagine with three drivers under the age of 18 you are going to be taking out a second mortgage on the dog to pay for insurance.
