Hey Gang.

I need advice on shipping a used all-aluminum two-hole dog box from Alabama to me in Illinois. This is from an individual and not a business.

What is the norm? Freight? I have never shipped anything freight before. Must it be packaged?

What about UPS? Too big? Would it cost more than freight?

Thanks in advance.

I had two shipped to me from Florida. The first one was broken down into sections that could be screwd together and it was boxed. Shipped UPS and it was damaged.

Shipper sent me another put together and it came Motor Freight unscathed.

Don't remember the exact cost but Motor Freight was the cheaper of the two.

Kevin,
Jerry is correct motor freight will be you best choice. See if the shipper can have it strapped down to a pallet. Find a local carrier in your area, there are many in the mid west area and ask them to quote the cost from one zip code to the other. Conway is a good one as they go across country but you might have a better local choice there. With the weight it might be in your best intrest to arrange to pick it up at the local terminal.

Call me if you need more help, this is sort of what I do everyday !

Alot of the Motor Freight companies won't ship to residential addresses. But, you can pick it up at their terminal. Whether you use UPS, DHL, FedEx or motor freight, they will need the approximate sizes and weights.

A service that I use is UniShippers http://www.unishippers.com/. The represent several parcel delivery companies as well as motor freight companies. It may be worth a call to them and let them do the shopping for you.

Hope this helps....

Kevin I had a drawer and two stainless steel crates shipped to me from Ainley fabrication in IA and I live in MI. I had to simply just go down to the Freight terminal and pick it up and they helped me put in my truck.

You might even call Ainley and ask them who they recommend. I believe the company they used to send my stuff was ABF Freight System http://www.abfs.com/

When I bought my 2 dog boxes from Creative sports supply in Alabama they used Old Dominion Freight Line (www.odfl.com) for shipping. I live in Wisconsin and they delivered it to my door. It costed my $284.00. I could of picked them up in a location in Milwaukee if I wanted to but I chose to have them come to my door, it took a extra day or two but I didn't have to drive. They had them strapped down to a pallet.

IF you have a friend who owns a business, you can have it shipped to them or the terminal.

Residential delivery is more expensive, because the freight line is concerned with setting appts and someone being there. Anywhere from 50-90 more as a rule.

Many freight carriers available, most have internet access to give you a quote. Most aluminum boxes will ship with a freight class of 125 or 150 and the weight around 150lbs.

I don't think UPS will handle this size of box. Try ABF!
