I have 2 NEF .22's and they have worked great for the past year or so. But now that we have been training in the cold (10-20degress) the hammer won't lock back. Anyone else have this problem?

Needs to be cleaned Mike and a very fine oil used.

I will try that again. I had just cleaned and gave them a light oil but they worked for about 8 shots then started having problems again that's why I wondered if it could be the cold.

Yes, I have exactly the same problem with a relatively new gun, same model. I would think either the cocking mechanism (probably spring-loaded) is weak or tolerances poor. But I'll try cleaning & using a finer oil also that may not be as cold-affected.

why do you need the hammer to lock back?

For one reason, I use a grand-daughter as a birdgirl some & she has difficulty cycling the action without first cocking the hammer. For another reason, the gun is designed to allow cocking.

That is cool 8) I just never use mine like that. The hammer on mine does lock back. I went out and got it from the truck, very cold. :shock:

Off topic but she has also titled a retriever, duck hunts & shot flyers for us (under her dad's close supervision) this past Sat. Out of 25 flyers they only had one runner. Her dad has shorten the stock on a 20 ga. Rem 1100 youth model & she's a pretty good shot........and she's only 9 yrs old.

With gloves on cocking the hammer back is the only way it can be shot. Now that it has been indoors the hammer locks back just fine???? Guess thats another reason to pray for an early spring!!

I am not speaking negatively of any particular brand, but all of them seen to be disposable when used alot.
We use the 209 primer variety.
We had the 8 shot model, which with very heavily used, lasted about a year. Alot of misfires and we were happy to lose them.
We bought 2 of the new 5 shot models, and we have had customize them to work in less than 6 months. Now--you can't cock them back and shot single action.
Just my experience
