OK,
I have a new pup that is 5 months old and am about to start formal ob using the smartworks method. The pup lives in an outdoor kennel and gets to run around and play with the kids every evening after our short training sessions. What should the routine be with the pup now that ob is started? Do I allow the kids as much freedom with the pup? Thanks in advance.

I will type ponderings on this matter. Feel free to shoot me.

Is this a dog a future pet or prospective high level competition dog?

EVery study has shown socialisation under controlled safe being very important. Under 18 months, most critical periods occur, which normally correlates to expected fundamental/basic training.

Of course kids want to play with the dog, but will the kids, in time, start playing before training, and tire the dog out mentally and physically? Are the children old enough to close gates etc.

Personally I like dogs in the house as well, in crates or under some other control.

By having my dogs in the house, and bearing in mind our climate, say for obedience, short concentrated frequent training is at hand.
