I'm in the same boat looking for a new work truck after lemon lawing my 04 Titan. I love the Cummins engine but don't necessarily like the idea of having to purchase a Dodge to go with it. Past experience has been rattles and squeaks. I have only one person I know happy with the new Ford diesel out of many others who have traded them off or had engines replaced. The Chevy seems to have many great traits but looks to be 4-5 thousand higher in my searching. Besides with climbing fuel prices the Cummins looks better each day IMHO.

I have a Dodge diesel truck. I love the engine. It is the best diesel engine in the light trucks. My truck has 36K on it though and already has quite a few rattles. Most of the miles are highway miles too. My dad has a Excursion with the 6.0 powerstroke and it gets bad mileage. The Chevy will get better mileage than the other two. The Dodge body and interior will fall apart. The Drive train will hold up forever. Haven't seen to much bad stuff on the Chevy. The Ford truck has the best cab and looks better though. IMHO

I think a F250 diesel would be your best bet...

My overly retired parents have one to pull around the new 5th wheel, and dad sez that it doesn't even seem like its pulling anything at all.

Dad is a retired highway commissioner and has lived his whole life around heavy equipment. He's very willing to share how most things are a "piece", but he's been pretty happy with this one - other than "ok" mileage...

for what it's worth...

You left Honda off the list!
Toyota Hilux Diesel pickup. (I know the Aussies know this truck  )

Great MPG and also the most indestrutable vehicles on the planet. How indestrutable? How about being under seawater for a few hours....

I too, have a toyota hilux ute.Not diesal tho.. don't like diesal always found it a little gutless compared to petrol besides the price of diesal is higher than petrol down under.
If we're talking utes (pickups) I would like the 6 door Ford F650 ute, I could fit in, kids, dogs, throwers, training gear and still have room to throw a party in the back of it.

I am planning to replace my 2001 F 250 diesel (170,000 miles and counting) with a new F 250 diesel. The 2007 model will have some minor styling changes and a new 6.4 liter engine. There were some problems with the early version of the 6.0 but everyone I know who has a 2005 or 2006 loves them.

If you are pulling a load you definitely want a diesel whichever brand you choose. And if you are going to put a chasis mount box on it I would get an F 350 even if your box is small.

I also know people who love their Chevy and Dodge diesels, but where I live there are many more people who drive Ford trucks and pull trailers or use them for work. And they have unusually high resale value. Don't forget 4 wheel drive, skid plates, and limited slip differential 8)

I would have said Ford, but I will not support until they stop supporting some of the groups that they support. If any one wants to know more let me know.

My brother-in-law has a Dodge diesel he takes two tractors to antique shows all over the Midwest he loves it.

If you compare repair rates, cost of operating and purchased price. The old argument Ford/Chevy/Dodge is no longer valid. Because none of those trucks are better than the Japanese models. I believe Ford to be the better domestic. The poll needs a other or neither.

Why don't we just list the Chassic mounts we know of and I think the answer is obvious:

Danny Farmer - F-450
Clint Avant - F-450
Rorem F-450
Mosher F-350
Maury Smith F-350
Mad River F-350
Bozeman Chevy
Tatum Dodge
Wickcliffe F-350
Gierman Chevy
Broyles F-350
Lee Jolley F-350
Edwards F-350

Know lot more - but I will let others chime in.

I just happen to know more about Trucks than dogs. People bring up the toyota's and such but, you are not going to put a heavy chassis mount on a toyota, nissan, or honda. They are not in the same league of the heavy duty American made trucks.

I feel the Ford by far has the strongest frame, chassis, and suspension. For putting something like a chassis mount you definately will need heavy duty and strong. Ford has been the leader in this heavy work capability for many many years. I feel all the diesels are pretty dang good right now. The place I feel Ford is the leader (mecahnically) is in the transmission. The Torqueshift has just been AWESOME!! GM came up with a great thing in the partly built and designed Allison. That really changed things in automatic transmissions. But, Ford realized it was good and worked real hard to make it even better. The Torqueshift has just been rock-solid and makes the engine packages that much better. The reliability of them has been very very good too. I can't think of any major tranny problem in our shop in the entire three plus years they have been out. There is a minor little quick fix here and there but, not major stuff at all that I have seen. There are a lot of other things I feel Ford is tops at and if you want I can go on about them.

Ed, The newly designed Super duty is not a 2007 model. It will be a 2008 model that has the newly designed body and new 6.4 twin turbo diesel engine. It will be introduced early though and should hit the Showrooms in January of 2007. The 2007 model is already being built and will be to dealerships pretty soon. No changes have been made to it other than a couple new options you can add. You are right there were some early issues with the 6.0 diesels and as you said the 05-06's have been very very strong with little problems.

As far as diesel vs gas. That is tough. If you are hauling or towing a heavy load often, than diesel is the only way to go really. If you don't drive much or haul much than the V10 is not a bad way to go. A lot less money up front, cheaper oil changes (more often though), but, reasale will definately be softer than a diesel. You will get anywhere between 10-15 MPG with the V10 depending how you drive. Diesel should get 2-4 mpg better than that, again depending on what you do with them and how you drive. With Fords, the newer 3V V10 and the 5 speed auto are much improved too.

If you have any questions that I can answer, please let me know.

Good Luck, Travis
