San Francisco moved up to draft the G.O.A.T.- Jerry Rice at # 16. There were two receivers drafted before Rice, Al Toon and some guy I never heard of. Mike and Mike this morning.

Two schools of thought on draft day- draft for need or draft the best player available. The Packers GM a few years back subscribed to the best player available. They at the time had Bret Favre and and didn't need to draft a QB. Their first pick was Arron Rogers.

In Ozzie we trust. Ravens fans would know what I mean.
Look at the Ravens first round draft picks.

Maybe a mistake or 2 like Boller and Taylor. But I think there are more then a couple Hall Of Famers on that list. 2004 and 2010 they didnt have a first rounder.

Jonathan Ogden
Ray Lewis
Peter Boulware
Duane Starks
Chris McAlister
Jamal Lewis
Travis Taylor
Todd Heap
Ed Reed
Terrell Suggs
Kyle Boller
Mark Clayton
Haloti Ngata
Ben Grubbs
Joe Flacco
Michael Oher
Jimmy Smith

Bart Scott was signed by the ravens as a undrafter free agent.

Terrell Suggs fell to the ravens when his 40 time went up because of a surgery. The ravens said if he has to chase a QB 40 yards they have bigger issues.

Jameel McClain undrafter free agent. Might be taking over Ray Lewis spot when he retires.

Dannell Ellerbe another undrafter free agent that made some starts this year an da up and coming ILB.

The ravens had another undrafter free agent make the team last year Laquan Williams. Be played his high school ball in Baltimore at Poly and played at UMD. He was on the field on my friends flag team when he got the call from his agent the ravens want to see you. He walked off and the field and made the ravens.

yall forget that yall are quoting old drafts. this a new draft with a NEW rookie wage scale. you can move way up to draft the person you like and still pay him what you would had you got him late.

teams can now "reach" high for picks and not have a jamarcus russel type situation on their payroll

i look to see a lot of picks get traded. think i heard that the jets wanted to trade higher to get trent richardson before anyone else.

in the past they always said never draft a qb early unless he was phenominal. in the future i think we'll se a lot more qb's taken early by teams that need one. i.e. RG3. yes he's great but i think any other year he'd be mid to late 1st round but the redskins need a qb so why not draft him early.

im hoping joe adams gets a late 1st rounder but prolly mid to late 2nd along with greg childs. both will be steals as a punt returner/split end and wide out respectively. same with jarius wright.
same thing with tannehill there were talks of tannehill being taken 3rd by a team that trades some picks for that spot. if he gets taken late first round or 3rd pick he'll still get the same money. hes prolly a mid 2nd round at best but why not take the gamble

I think the way teams approach the draft depends on the quality of their team. One of the reasons the Ravens and Packers (among others) have been successful is because they used the draft to add depth to their team by drafting the best player available. Teams that are really bad (such as my Niners in during most of the 2000's) drafted for need because they had so many holes in their roster. That rarely works out well.

Drafting for need resulted in the following big time busts for them:

Jim Druckenmiller, Quarterback - 1997 NFL Draft
J.J. Stokes, Wide Receiver - 1995 NFL Draft
Rashaun Woods, Wide Receiver - 2004 NFL Draft
Mike Rumph, Cornerback - 2002 NFL Draft
Kentwan Balmer, Defensive End - 2008 NFL Draft
Kwame Harris, Offensive Tackle - 2003 NFL Draft
Reggie McGrew, Defensive Tackle - 1999 NFL Draft

It didn't help that they had a horrid front office during most of that time. And don't get me started on Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary as Head Coaches!

Biggest bust of All Time....Ryan Leaf...and to think there was actually a small contingent that would have picked him over the eventual # 1 pick...thats right Peyton Manning

I think you will see the Viks take the best Cornerback in the draft, Morris Claiborne. He will make at least as big an impact as a rookie as Patrick Peterson did last season.

My team hits homeruns in rounds 3 thru 7 and doesn't do well in the earlier rounds. Marques Colston 7th round, Jimmy Graham 3rd round, O Lineman Jahri Evens, Zack Strief later rounds, CB Johnny Patrick 7th round, ILB Martez Wilson 3rd round, Punter Thomas Morested 7th round. Jerome Bushrod 4th round.

Not such a small contingent alot of people thought he was better than Peyton.

However, demarcus Russell gets my vote as the biggest bust ever. Seems he liked the cough syrup more than football.

Could argue Jamarcus Russell is the biggest bust of all time. Leaf had a couple more teams willing to give him chances. Not sure if Russell ever got a call to sell popcorn at another stadium.

I personally saw him play and practice. The most amazing arm I have ever seen. Watched him out throw, just throw, Peyton, Eli, Sam Bradford, and several other big time QB's. He knelt on the 40 and threw the ball through the opposite uprights. Such a waste of amazing talent.

Eh, Bushrod is garbage.

I like Mo Claiborne, but Patrick Peterson is in his own league.

Bushrod is certanly no Willie Roaf but he 's been the starter at OT for the last three season for the #1 rated Offense in the league so he can't be that bad. Certainly better than Charlie Brown OT USC a second round pick.

I'd love to see them beef up thier O Line but I expect them to go for D linemen, D backs and OLB's.

Shouldn't you guys be more worried about who's gonna coach the team?

We have a group of great coaches. First 6 games, Aaron Kromer and after that Joe Vitt.

I am very much looking forward to my team playing with a chip on their shoulder again!;-)

The NFLPA has asked for proof and the NFL won't provide it to the players or their union. That's been the hold up on any player suspensions. If the NFL does suspend players without providing any proof, the NFLPA will file suit with the league and we just might wind up with Sean Payton this season as well as our GM:D

Mandarich would be in the top 5 but for overall fantastic flame out, Leaf was and may always be the biggest bust. #2 pick, several thought had a higher ceiling than Manning, though Manning was more "NFL ready"....and currently considered a fugitive from justice by the state of Texas.

With Jamarcus Russell, nobody other than Al Davis thought he deserved to be the #1 pick despite his physical tools.
