Sherri and I got to go visit with Cai Trzepacz and Joe Pilar again this last weekend (more about that later) and she gave me a stack of old magazines she no longer wanted.

One of them was an October 1970 issue of MINNESOTA DOG. They report the results from the Bemidji Headwaters Retriever Club trial, and in the Qualifying stake, the judges deliberately withheld awarding any first place, and only placed second through fourth! (The names of the judges are not given.)

I have personally witnessed this at dog shows, but have never heard of it in a FT!

Has anyone else?

I think (I have a temp of 102 now, so this may not be correct) that the rulebook states that if there is no 1st, then there is no 2nd, etc.

I could have this way wrong, but I think there is something to that effect in the book.

Off to chug some Nyquil.

I seem to recall the same thing.

I wonder if this was before the rule change?

Or maybe this was not a licensed trial?

Prior to about 1990 +/-, judges could choose to withhold whatever ribbons they chose.

I remember a particular Derby not too far from here where the judges gave a first, second, and four jams.

The rule changed not too long after that!

I can't think of a trial here in Ontario or Canada where no 1st place ribbon was given out but 2nd, 3rd, and so on was -- I know there are times when only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd were given out
