After two dogs became ill with kidney failure, the vet sent samples of their food, Nutra Nuggets, to UC Davis for testing. The samples came up positive for melamine. Nutra Nuggets are distributed by Costco and Smart & Final in this area.

I just found out it is manufactured by Diamond. Since I feed Nutra Nuggets to my non working dogs, I called the company. The rep said only one batch was contaminated - NLR0404, expiration 10/9 & 10/10/2008 and it was only distributed on the West Coast.

I asked her if they tested all of the batches before declaring that none of contained melamine. She said they did, but this batch was manufactured after the testing. If this is true, it is even more disturbing because it probably means they used rice concentrates from China without testing even though they knew there was a problem. It sounds like Diamond has serious quality control problems.
