Want to build a bench around a tree. The distance from flat to flat on the inner part of the octagon will be four feet. The seat part of the bench will be made from four 2x6's.

Need to know the dimensions for both inner and outer frames.

I made a small one just to see if I could do it. The boards were cut at 6 inch lengths, 22 1/2 degree cuts, which gave me a distance of 11 1/2" between the flats. Can't figure out how to expand that to the larger size w/o a bunch of trial/error.

Once I get the proper size of the two octagons, the bracing on the inside will be easy.

Can you help me?

Finally a topic I can help with.

I am new to training and have only ran 3 seaoned hunt tests which we passed. I read this site daily learning from the pro's.

To answer your question, to calculate the inside dim. take the flat to flat dimension and divide by the tan. of 67.5 degrees. 48" between would be 19 7/8 on inside of miter, figuring 5 1/2" wide board long point should be around 24 7/16. Second frame should be 24 7/16 + extra on inside of miter, allow extra for small space between 2x6's.

If the inside boards are 48" apart (48" dia tree) and you figure 5 1/2" boards with 1/4" gaps in between, the dimensions would be:

19.882, 24.438 1st board
24.645, 29.203 2nd
29.409, 33.966 3rd
34.173, 38.729 outside board

I hope this is a little clearer.

Now you're cooking with gas...
I divided 48 by (1+2sin45). That must be how EE's do it. :?

Now wait a minute!!

I don't care what length the top (seat) boards are!

I'm trying to build the frame to hold those top (seat) boards.

Gonna have some posts in the ground to hold the two frames with braces to tie them together. Then I will cut the top (seat) boards to whatever length they need to be with the proper angle.

Was making some good progress on the smaller octagon then a storm blew in and had to quit. :( :(

I found plastic ones I could buy. That's no fun.

I want to build it all by my ownself and make it strong so fat people can sit on it.

My little portion of the bench will have about a foot of foam rubber on it!!!

Cool, I'll bring my fat ass and together we'll sit with you and your foam...Might take me some time cuz my ass is needing another shave and if I'm coming all that way I might as well stop by and let jello babe pet it....
