I just got my RFTN yesterday. It listed some statistics from 2006. Is that info correct?!?!?!?!? It showed over 15,000 running in Open alone. I was astounded. Just because we have all been watching the Westminster pageant, it raised the question for me, how many dogs compete in the bench venues? I cant believe that there are that many field trialers out there, not to mention the hunt testers, and the ones in the show ring are considered the bench mark for the retriever breeds. Does anyone here know the numbers for the dog show world? Just curious.
Meaningless trivia regards.......

I'd be very surprised to find that more than 2500 are being actively campaigned in All of the FT stakes combined.

The average for dogs placing is 10+ trials per year. divide 15K by 10+ & you would get less than 1500 dogs entering.

Ok, I see where the 15,000 # came from. But is there any way to determine how many dogs are involved in FT altogether, (not just placing)? I am really curious now to see how the number of FT'ers compare to show dogs.

I suspect that John's estimate of 2500 dogs might be close, though maybe a little high, then consider the number of people who own and run multiple dogs, the number of people who participate becomes rather small

as an example in our Spring '06 trial there were 130 total entries, 96 total dogs and 60 owners

I would venture to estimate that 1000 +/- people are involved as owners of retriever field trial dogs

That doesn't seem like a lot, especially compared to the number of pups that hit the market every year. I wonder what percentage of FT bred dogs end up in FT homes every year.

That means there are 999 folks who strive for social acceptance through dogs..........................

And 1 who doesn't give a chiat.

a more interesting statistic would be

1. what percentage of field trial bred dogs end up competing in field trials

2. what percentage of those dogs that compete achieve FC &/or AFC

Good point.....the number of different dogs would be lower....close to my original numbers.....I guess that's why I heard them.....

Oh well............. 8) ...............I hate when I see "reality" like this......sure takes some of the JAZZ out of the pursuit of the title......the distance to achieving it, I mean....... :? .........................

Good thing the people and the pursuit ARE the JAZZ!
