First of all let me say that I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech yesterday and that my prayers go out to all involved. The following is in no way meant to demean anything that happened yesterday, but is a commentary on what our society has become.
While watching the events unfold yesterday I was struck by the notion that our media has become the single biggest threat to our way of life today. As soon as the news of the killings began to break, the press was there. What is wrong with this you may ask? Nothing if they are there to cover the breaking news, however, while the bullets were still flying there are already reporters asking why? How? Who’s fault? And Why wasn’t something done to prevent this from happening? Some of these are legitimate new questions, at least how and why, but when did it become the medias job to investigate a crime and place blame on someone? The key issue here being placing blame on SOMEONE, and the someone being a person/persons or organization other than the shooter! If I heard the question “why were the students not notified sooner?” once, I heard it a thousand times. Why do we need to blame someone other than the pos gunman that did the killing? Would it have been nice to be able to warn everyone? Yes. Could it have been done? I do not think so. VT has 26,000 students, 5000+ employees, and 2000 daily visitors. Of the 26,000 students, 9000 live on campus. Will someone please explain to me exactly how you would go about notifying over 30,000 people about something that happens as fast as a shooting, even one that takes an extended amount of time? I have seen numerous reporters ask why officials did not “lock the campus down”. I would think most reporters had to attend college and should realize that this is not an elementary school that has a chain link fence around it and 200 students inside. I have not been to VT, but I have been on many other campuses and all that I have been too are very much like a small town. How would you lock down something such as this? Why can’t the press just point the finger where blame belongs, at the shooter?
I watched Matt Lauer (sic?) this morning grilling the president of VT about the above questions. Why didn’t you do more? Why was this allowed to happen? I had a hard time keeping my breakfast down. Last week we got to watch as the media destroyed the career of a man for simplify doing what he has done forever (Don Imus). I am not saying he was right or wrong, just that he was tried and convicted in the media. Imus broke no laws and in fact was fired for exercising his freedom of speech. I am quite sure it is not against the law to say “nappy headed hos” on the radio or anywhere else for that matter. I can tell you from the cars that pull up beside me blaring rap music that it is not even against the law to say ******. Had the media not picked up on what he said (several days later I might ad) and played it on every news outlet in the country the man would still be doing what he always had been (argue that him not doing what he does is a good thing if you wish, but again freedom of speech is something you have no control over and you are always free to switch stations and not listen). I do not like a lot of things that are said by a lot of people and I just don’t listen. I don’t waste my time trying to force my beliefs or morals on the people that say or listen to things I do not like. Lets see how much heat the VT president takes from this event and if the press can try and convict this man for not doing enough. My prediction is that the president and others will be forced to resign over this. What a shame that we have become a country that cannot think for ourselves and have to rely on sensationalist to tell us what we should be outraged about.
Below are a couple of headlines that are out there today that illustrate the medias witch-hunt attitude that is standard operating procedure for the press these days.

WP: Would more have survived if campus officials acted sooner?

More on Shootings
• Newsweek: Campus was fearful, even before Monday
Search for answers after rampage

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Police and university authorities faced pressure Tuesday to explain how a gunman apparently evaded detection after killing two people and then went on to kill 30 others two hours later in America’s worst shooting rampage.

Mindless flock of sheep regards.

I agree with your thoughts. Why is a college any different from any other town (when your college has that many people in it that is essentially what it is, a town)? If there was a shooting in downtown Charlotte today are the police expected to put 2000+ surrounding acres into lock down? I don't know all of the details, but was there any evidence present to warn the police that this individual was going to start a killing spree after the initial shooting in the morning?

I hate all of the second guessing and crucifiction that our media does. How about reporting the facts and leave the critique to someone who knows what the hell they are talking about?

I was outraged as well when I heard the news. The tragic senseless loss of life. All those young people who's bright future was cut so short. The problem is, when in the VERY FIRST MOMENT I heard the news and became outraged. It was not over the tragic senseless loss of life, that came in the second moment. It was "Dammit yet another incident that will f*c$ me and other responsible gun owners across the country!" I know..... I'm going to Hell.

I agree with your point that the media has become too influencial and too self absorbed. The advent of 24/7 news converage any a story is getting out of hand. I remember when JFK Jr's plane went down and we got non stop coverage of the story as they looked for the wreck. I thought to myself, WHY do we need so much excessive coverage. I think it is partially to be in control of what we watch, but also to get ratings, it boils down to money and control. I am sure that the media and the anti-gun people will try to spin this tragedy to take away more of our freedoms. How many more laws would have stopped the gunman, none. No matter how many video monitors you have it is not rocket science to hide a gun and start shooting long before any authorities could respond. We are responsible for our ouwn safety NO ONE else can GUARANTEE safety. But hold on for the huge anti gun push we are going to see now, if they would only enforce tha laws we have and let law abiding citizens alone. Law abiding citizens are the only ones who will obey the laws so we have the ability to protect ourselves removed while the criminals get more leeway since they do not have to worry about "us".

And a couple of other things...gun control was brought up last night and whether this incident would put that topic in the forefront again...

But my favorite: Will there be copycats? If the idea was not already in some sick person's mind, the media helps them along by introducing the idea with all of the notoriety...

Did you get a chance to listen to the students. I watched a little of CNN last night and every student I heard was articulate and well spoken. The interviewer tried to pidgeon hole them into saying that the administration had done something wrong, had not warned them sooner, had not blocked off campus. Each student said there was no way it was anyone's fault but the guy who pulled the trigger.

CNN then flashed to commercial, on the way it showed an note saying that a teenager in Va could purchase a gun. What does that have to do with the horrible events at VT? I don't have children yet but I would certainly rather have my teenager with a gun out in the woods than standing on a street corner. It is really sad that we have gotten to this point, it always has to be someone's fault. Those poor kids, all they were doing was going to school.

This is one (link below) that is really making me sick. It is a report on how OTHER COUNTRIES think our gun laws are the problem. I don’t give a flying rats butthole if India, England, France, or Australia thinks there way of doing things is better than ours. Last I remember that is the reason we broke away for Europe a couple of centuries ago.
When I read this I said something about guns not killing people… A girl in the office started in on anti gun rhetoric and I pointed out how many people are killed by drunk drivers. Her retort was that “well it is illegal to drive drunk”! I shut her up with “the last I checked it was illegal to shoot someone too”!

perhaps some day we will have an official govt approved news station (1).

then we won't have to worry that the media is asking the wrong question, reporting news the wrong way, sensationalizing isolated incidents, etc.

there will only be news reported the "right" way.

if you were the parent/relative of one of those kids who were gunned down in the second part of this atrocity, would you be asking those same questions?

i KNOW i would.

be careful what you wish for.-paul

One of my son's best friends attends VT, and I supervise 3 people there. My first thoughts were of their safety, and thankfully, all are safe. The people I supervise are located in a building right next to the dormitory where the initial deaths occurred.

My second thoughts were that here we go again, with unrelenting news coverage and more assaults on our rights to possess guns. Every time something like this happens it is not only a terrible tragedy for the people involved, but also for us as law abiding citizens who happen to use guns for our recreation.

I wish we would hear as much outrage when someone is killed by an automobile.... we should ban them all.

Keep VT in your thoughts today. As a parent, and particularly one who has a son in college, I can't imagine the horror.

Virginia tech is front page news in australia. ABC lead story tonight begins with lax US gun laws contribute to massacre of 33 people
Howard made a complete mess of the buy back scheme back in 96. He spent closer to 300 million down sizing everyones armery. so we all took the money and purchased new guns from germany, italy and the US. I have a beautiful little 12 gauge from czechoslvakia
now only the criminals have automatic weapons and the country is 300 million poorer
Like you in the US we brace ourselves for the inevitable backlash

I agree with your thoughts on this tragity and the media being a powerful tool that needs to be controlled/regulated as they can do far more damage and influence todays society more than most people give it credit for. That whole Imus thing really got me going last week with the media, Al Sharptons and Jessie Jacksons getting all over this guy resulting in destroying the guys life over some poorly choosen words that were only a result of a attempt by a 67 year old white guy trying to be hip without having the right skin color, very sad! If you want to talk about a doubble standard and the real problem look no furthur than BET, MTV, your local rap radio channel, or a ganster video games to see what considered OK as it's everywhere bombarding the population regardless of color.

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I dont have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybodys pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we havent told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!

I saw a friend yesterday, who is a cop. He immediatley said, "If more people had guns are were allowed to carry them, then this %*&^ wouldn't happen."

I agree. As many have noticed, most of these mass shootings occur in gun free zones. I am not proposing that every college student have a gun, but I say if they are 21 and have went through the concealed carry class then take away the socalled safe zones. The whole picture changes if one of the janitors drops the guy with a .45 slug after the first few shots.

Look at the Utah mall shooting. It was an off duty cop who was carrying a weapon that stopped the freak.

Just my angry thoughts.

I didn't watch one second of the coverage on TV. Everytime an idiot, gone crazy, starts shooting people they start calling for our guns. I'm not supporting that crap. I seen the above link on MSN as well. I didn't click on it. Not supporting that crap eather. We "feed" these morons with giving them an ear.

Yesterday was a sad, sad day in our Countries history. It was no ones fault except one crazy guy from "who knows where".

Some very good observations.
More thoughts on todays' media, let me add;

All News Reporting is about ratings which equate to $$$. News organizations are now in the business of sensationalizing the news to help in keeping listeners/viewers/readers consuming more of their product and for longer periods of time. When a big tragedy happens, they are going to milk if for all they can. They will even make minor stories bigger than they are; when the news events are slow i.e. Anna Nicole.

They will slant the news to fit the flavor of their owner or editor. The industry generally attracts folks way left of center. You can bet that after they falsely accuse the university that they will go after the NRA and not the deranged shooter. One reason for Fox News’s popularity is that they are the only large media coverage company that represents the right of center.

Finally, lets not forget that we live in a country of Reverse Discrimination. It is OK for African Americans to do and say whatever they want to with no media backlash. Last case in point is the Don Imus situation. CBS which owns the Don Imus Show also is one of the world's largest purveyors of Gangsta Rap. Organizations like the National Black Caucus, Black Panthers, BET TV and many more are given a license to do and say what they want. Yet, a leader like Trent Lott has to give up his Majority Speaker role because he paid tribute with a very small comment he made at a birthday party. People like Al Shapton and Jesse Jackson can ruin people’s lives, get caught for selling crack and other acts and not be targeted by most of today's media.

The fact of the matter is that our society walks this tightrope every day. How do you safeguard the liberties of the individual yet still provide safety and security for the masses? There is no correct answer. So we try to strike a balance that most can accept. The media is in the enviable position of being able to dissect a situation after the fact then lay blame. I don't know what the fallout will be for the VT administration. I guess time will tell. But as for law enforcement, we are big boys. We are used to being second guessed and blamed for both our lack of response and/or our overkill. It comes with the bad hours and getting to run toward the guns. That said, I don't think there is much I would change. Like it or not we need the checks and balances. We need outside entities to ask "why" "how" and "why didn't you". It's just one of the debts that we pay to live in a free country / the greatest country in the world. The real tragedy is with the students and their families. Ya, somebody will end up with a black eye over this, but a black eye won't land you in a morgue.

Yes... and please remember that it was a "crazy" person... I just got an email from a scientist I supervise there in which he stated he would be away from the office to attend a memorial convocation this afternoon. An Asian-descent female student of his is afraid to attend.... so he is going with her.

Its a sad day... a sad world sometimes.

You are right this is a sad day, but sad days for us as a nation are few and far between and are far outweighed by the hundreds of good days we have inbetween

I don't believe in sensoring the media either, but when they send all these news crews and all they can do is ask the same questions on every channel- when they are being told no one has anymore information- and they start postulating and convicting- listen for awhile and use the remote- If people don't listen they won't make $$$ and maybe there will be more balanced journalism instead of just pumping up sensationalism, or is the American public that starved?
