I hope Dennis Voigt doesn't mind my posting this as it came from a Retrievers Online issue. These are quotes from 30 years ago:

Overheard from judges:

I don't believe I've ever seen a dog hunt so hard.

Meaning:

...or so long.

He seems to be a little out of control.

Meaning:

Let me know when he decides to come back.

Your dog shows a lot of promise

Meaning:

Why don't you get someone to train him?

He seems very steady.

Meaning:

If he refuses to retrieve once more, you're out.

I think you'd better handle him.

Meaning:

Now we've laughed at your dog-let's laugh at you.

I'm sorry to lose this dog.

Meaning:

You should have called him in before he went completely out of sight.

:)

They left out, "That sure is a purty dawg."

I had a judge lean over the holding blind before Kate & I came to line in an AKC Senior test and say, "Well, now. Isn't that pretty?"

When he gave me my ribbon at the end of the day I said, "She looks flat out gorgeous now".

When I was given that "compliment", it didn't involve a ribbon  .
