Depends upon what you want the pup to do, doesn't it. If winning FT's or qualifying dependably in HT's is your plan... go for the field bred lab from a breeder that's been producing winners for a long time. Same holds true if you want a non-stop, no-quit hunting companion.
Can't over emphasize the importance of choosing the breeder. The one to whom I was referred does several litters/year and has specific reasons for the breedings she plans. If you ask for a pup with a lot of piss and vinegar... she'll tell you when that litter is in the works. Want a more mellow breeding, same thing.
AND (MOST important of all) the breeder must carefully screen out heritable problems and get the studs and bitches certified.
