I am wanting some insight as to how everyone in here picks a pup when they get one.

I am keeping a pup from my FC AFC Rebel with a Cause litter, and you guys always have some good insight. All of the dogs have a good temperment, they are all birdy (They respond to duck wings like I respond to chocolate!)

I got in this discussion with a couple of very good breeders this weekend, and we were talking about what puppy buyers say they want, and how to pick out just the right puppy. and the agreement was that there is just no way to know. Puppies change from day to day, and what you see in a puppy at 6 weeks will unlikey be exactly the same at 12 weeks. Some of the stories of some of the great dogs in the reteriver world document that. Dogs that are the "left over" becoming FC/AFC, greats! . THere are tons of temperment testing, and alot of folks say that there is a certain age that these tests are done. But as my friend said, what is to say that the day that the test is done, the really high energy puppy is pooped out that day, or just not feeling up to par. It is a crap shoot. From my Rex litter, I picked out the color and the head that I liked and am keeping my fingers crossed IMO. He got his JH this weekend at 9 months old. went 4-4.

I think YOU WILL KNOW which pups are special.

Of my 2 breedings, I had this feeling of which pups had something special. The way they carried themselves, courage, happy, driven, but sensible, liked people, curious, etc.

There were 2 of each gender that just seemed special to me. One male is an FC now, the other has an Open win. I own one of the females and she is running Master tests and will start a few Quals in a couple of weeks. The other female had an early end due to a tragic accident.
