So I take the young chessie to his first hunt test, one of two chessies entered in a Junior of 64 dogs. I know and have run under the judges before and they always set up a fair test. First bird is a dead bird, no problem dog never really even had to hunt, out and back. Second bird is a live flyer and about half the birds these guys are shooting are walking off when they hit the ground. I'm running late in the order so I know that some of these dogs aren't exactly jumping on these live birds. My dog gets to the bird, another runner, gets wings flapped in his face and since he's never seen any live birds before ( my fault) he backs off and starts looking for a dead bird. Now I know technically I'm toast but I fiqure they've been giving a some dogs a break on this so I get the dog back to the bird he picks him up and comes in. Judge says sorry I can't let that go and I'm done.
NOW, I know why I got dropped. I like and respect the judge. I just felt that some dogs were allowed more leeway and those dogs just happened to be Labs. So the two Chessies in the test happened to get dropped right off the bat, coincedence? I do have a call into Jackson and Sharpton.
On to the next test.

Ya want us to hire Guidos to go to their houses and break their legs? We could do that. We here at RTF are powerful folks, 'specially on a Monday.

Did you happen to ask how your dog's performance differed from others' performances that appeared to be similar?

I did actually, didn't really get an answer. I was getting a little hot so I fiqured I'll live to fight another day. Thanked both judges for their time and kept the windows on the truck rolled down on the way home so the steam could get out.

Reminds me of the only time we ever ran a Started test. Had a big, nearly year old Chesapeake pup that's training was well beyond that level - except he'd never seen live birds, which the HRC then used. Land pigeons were a walk in the park for him, as I thought the simple water marks would also be. But when Chien got to his first live duck, it started squawking its disapproval of the situation, and my poor startled pup started desperately searching for something else, anything else to retrieve. An embarrassing moment for the big, tough Chesapeake breed - that was entirely my fault for leaving that hole in the pup's experience.

If we are going to start a canine race war does that mean that only golden people will be able to call other goldens Fluffy while all other breeds will have to refer to them as the “F-word” so as not to start a race riot. And if someone calls my chessie a nappy bitch can I get them fired?

I was at a club fun trial and a certain young black labrador puppy (now a FC/AFC) was sent to retrieve a shot flyer. Well the duck got up and started walking around and when the duck saw the dog running toward it, the duck ran toward the dog as if it was angry. The dog turned around and hauled a$$ back toward the line. That had to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

When I first got into this I joined the nearest club, which was a field trial club (I didn't know the difference at the time) so naturally I sort of stuck out like a tard in a punchbowl with my nappy brown junior hunter I was so proud of.

Well I still belong to the club and one thing I've noticed about the "prejudice" is that it mostly comes from the people that haven't done too well with their own dogs; the ones that do more talking than training. The really good and successful dog people have been the most encouraging and recognize a good dog for a good dog, regardless of breed. The losers are the ones that say "Well what do you expect, it's a CHessie" when the mistake is the exact same one the other dogs made. The losers are the ones that think it makes them look better to make the disparaging comments about CBRs or goldens or anything different than what they have.

I can take the good natured jabs, it comes with the territory. But the losers (and yes some of them also judge) get their jollies making their sweeping negative generalizations--if it wasn't about the breed of dog they'd just think of something else.

Well your dog had a small hunt on the first bird and blinked the second bird flapping in it's face and needed to be handled back to it to then eventually picked it up. By your own submission you did'nt train on live birds and in the back of your mind knew that you should'nt have been called back. The fact that your dog was a chessepeake does'nt make a difference except in your mind. All this tells me is all those tales about Chessapeakes being aggressive are faulse, they are scared of little live birds

Oh come on now, can’t we all just get along…..I mean who says bandana’s and 2x4’s can’t be classified as training equipment….

I own a minority breed so don't get me wrong but you seem to have answered your own question here and because we didn't see the other dogs I'd say you should just leave it at that!

If your dog is trained well enough, its work will never be questioned and your fellow competitors will be congratulating you on great dog work regardless of breed you own!
