I have a 14 month old pup out of a great FT breeding (sire NFC dam 110 AA points) At an early age I began to noticed this young fellow ran hot.We got through the yard with no problems, always working early or later in the day when it was cooler. By hot I mean latters up very easy and breathes much heavier than dogs doing the same work load. His condition is very obvious.

Dog is now in Thomasville with well known pro almost finished with transition work. Day time temps are rangeing between 40 and 50 degrees. Dog is still running hot compared to others on the truck doing the same work load.

As concerned as I am now, what scares me is, if dog was to go north after the winter trip and temps begin to rise to 75 and 85 degreees.

Could others who have experienced this same condition please tell me how you dealt with it?

Thank you!

I also have a dog like that. Even when it is cool out you can feel the heat inside his box when you let him out. He always pants harder that the others doing the same work and drinks much more water than they do after working. I have never had any heat related problem with him, even during the summer. He always checks out ok at the vet. I wish we had day time highs in the 50’s. I don’t think we have had a daytime high that low all year. I watch him more in the summer and make sure he is staked out until he cools down before going back into the box. This dog is very, very muscular and has very course flat coat. My theory is that at least in part the heat he puts off is due to his muscularity and metabolism.

Ditto that, mine has "run hot" since he was 6 months old. Being as we are in the sweltering LowCountry, I take special care to keep him wet and lots of water. But even with the cool temps this past weekend, when we went out four wheeling for the afternoon, his tongue was hanging after the first mile. He stays fine, and cools out just right, not over tired or sore, just gets hot fast. He fits the same lean muscular profile as well. Very "hot" pup in general.
