What are RTFers thoughts on what you get out of Pre-National training? Other than shooting multiple flyers for your dog for 4-5 days what is it about this week before the national that helps or that is different from your every day weekly routine of training.

Probably the biggest reason to prenational train is to get the lay of the different type of grounds. Some venues are in high desert, some have different grasses that a dog may be used to seeing. A lot of it is the chance to get the dog tuned up to the multiple fliers, hen pheasants and hen fliers, rooster fliers, etc. The other part of it is that it's a chance to meet lots of new folks and their dogs and to forge new friendships in the game. Most will tell you that they enjoy the pre national training as much as the Trial. The training groups can also be very valuable in keeping a dog in tune once the trial starts since sometimes it can be a day before your dog runs again in the early stages.
