I have a client who has a 6 month old lab puppy that has had two bladder infections recently. The vet has administered antibiotics both times. What could be causing this? He thought it might be a food thing. Should he seek a second opinion to get to the bottom of this?

Thanks,
Carrie

I would ask if the vet tested the urine for any crystals... the beginning of gallbladder stones. Sometimes they don't produce enough acid in their urine and they end up with bladder infections, etc.

If this is the case, they have to be fed a urinary tract formula food to help maintain the acid level.

The only thing that comes to mind.

There are numerous reasons, some of which have already been mentioned. Was a culture taken to make sure that the antibiotic was correct? Was the urine re-cultured in 7 days after being off the antibiotics? ie: perhaps the dog wasn't on them long enough to get rid of the infection..... Have they checked the ears?

The most common cause of a repeat infection is not taking the medication until it is gone, not taking the medication daily or as prescribed, and not have a retest at the completion of the medication to assure that the infection was gone and no additional treatment was necessary.

The vet had said that they have been finding a lot of bacteria in her urine along with some white blood cells. They say that she will grow out of it. Vulva is normal, not sure about the crystals, and I am almost positive that they are using the term bladder infection.

Thanks for all the help so far!

In young female dogs that haven't come into heat yet can have vaganitis. You will get WBC in the urinalysis from that. If there is bacteria in the urine you need to do a culture like others have said to see if the antibiotic is the right one. If the dog is currently on medication the culture can't be done until the medication is finished and then a couple of days later it can be done. It is not uncommon to have a urinary tract infection take a couple of treatments to clear it up.
