For 13 years, Charlie and Yvonne Hays have moderated the Judges' Corner for the Retriever News. They have decided to retire from their role as moderators effective with the February/March issue of the RN. Although, I certainly I understand their desire to retire from that role, I and many others regret their decision. Charlie and Yvonne did a great job with the Judges' Corner.

I am honored and flattered that the Retriever News has asked me to moderate the Judges' Corner beginning April 2012. Helping me with this task will be Robbie Bickley, Jason Fleming, and Terry Rotschafer.

As before, we will not be answering the questions submitted to the Retriever News for a response. Rather, we will be forwarding those questions to experienced judges from throughout the country for their opinions.

Unlike before, some questions will be submitted to multiple judges, so that readers may be exposed to multiple opinions on one subject.

I hope that you find this new approach interesting and ask that you submit any Field Trial Judging Questions that you may have to the Retriever News.

I'll save you some time and money......

Up to the first holding blind, Yes.

Now John, Bless Your Heart, you know you can take a derby dog to line on lead and remove it on the mat. Then, you need to put it in your pocket.

P.S. I will look foward to continuing to read the judge's corner and viewing the new format.

Excellent Ted. I'm looking forward to it.

I have actually not had a subscription in quite some time. Dennis Ebner has graciously given me some copies when I've seen him, and I keep meaning to re-up my subscription.

Now's another good reason for me to actually do it. (just renewed with Retrievers ONLINE in my bill pay session yesterday.)

The best of luck in this endeavor!!!!!!

The issue of judging came about in the 80's, so it's not a new issue. Just the one that has not been properly dealt with :(. & as outlined in Dennis & John's letter the AKC has some issues with improperly run clubs.

I looked back through my issues of RN, then RFTN & show nothing in 1980 as far as a Judge's Corner column. In the Feb/Mar issue 1986 there is a small column with a 41 above it (meaning that is the 41st question that was answered). I have all of Bob Wolfe's RFTN's & believe him to be the instigator & 1st moderator of the Judges Corner.

Bob was very concerned at that time with judging quality & what to do to correct the situation. I suggested that AKC approved 8 point judges should also have placed a dog in AA stakes the same number of times prior to receiving the blessing to be on their own. Bob requested I do some research to prove my point & when that was submitted he published my letter. It gained no traction, which surprised me. After doing the database for FTretrieverjudge.net it does not surprise me anymore. More than 1/2 of all AKC approved judges have never placed a dog in ANY stake in a licensed Retriever Field Trial.

I remember a discussion I had with a person who had judged a National about switching. Needless to say, it's not only the newbies that need to be brought to speed.

So I do sincerely wish you luck - the dogs deserve better judging :).
