I am wanting to put in a septic tank at my kennels and ask a septic tank person about it and he told me dog waste will not break down in a septic tank. What do you guys use for your kennels ?

I use a plastic 50 gallon drum buried with a 4 inch pvc pipe dropping into it from a drain off of a trough on the back of my runs. I pour the septic powder into it once per month and it has worked fine for 3+ dogs for 3 years now. I need to use a wet vac to suck out the hair but its working fine.

It breaks down fine.

I would go ahead and put in a normal Septic tank, with a drain field. Use a screen to minimize the dog hair and be prepared to pump the tank out once every 7-8 years.

Thanks guys for the info. The way this guy told me it sounded like I would have to pump it out once a year.If its only every 7 to 8 years then im going to go with the septic tank.

Only time you have to pump it is when it's FULL of poop.

$100 or so to pump it every 7-8 years ain't bad.

I've also been told that a pack of regular kitchen yeast chunked in there maybe once a year will help. Don't know that for a fact but it don't cost much to try it!!!!! :D :D

You might want to get the second tank for the over flow water until the Primary tank fills with waste. Primary tank is the only one that needs pumping.

Had a septic system for about thirty years and think I've had it pumped twice, maybe three times. But I also have a large drain field.

As full of sh*t as you are I would think you would have it pumped every 5 minuets.

I just asked a friend of mine that works for a septic company and he said they suggest a pack of yeast in it every 3-4 weeks. You can buy a box of packets of yeast at the grocery store for like 5-10 dollars. He said having it cleaned the first time after about 2 years just to see how much you used in that first 2 years then gauge from that.

You Goober, leave me alone. I'm on a roll!!!

I'm trying to reform and post meaningful things so Mr. Fallon will think highly of me. Sort of like he does.

And just in case there's any misconception about pumping it, one should not use a siphon hose!!!!

When you get it pumped you should have both tanks cleaned out. The main tank is your primary settling tank and the second tank gets the remaining particles in the water.

After you have the tank cleaned out that is when you want to add the yeast or septic powder from the store to help get the tank working again(and by working I mean biologicaly) and then add a packet every couple months if you don't use very much chlorine to disinfect the runs. If you use alot of chlorine then you should add the packets more often.

I got one of those Doggie Doileys for chirstmas last year, and buried it.
It works great but I am about of the digester that came with it. Can I use Rid X instead, or should I buy the replacement pack of digester from the company?

achiro,
Do you have a leach line coming off the drum or is the drum just perforated with a gravel bed underneath?
I actually did the gravel under and rocks inside 1/3 full first but added a lateral line later on. It was filling with water and over flowing not from the poo just the water. Since adding the lateral line, I've had zero problems with it.

I would use a real septic tank if I was in a more perrmanent location but this works great for what I need.

I pretty much got the idea from those doggie doody things. I figured if that plastic pyramid thing buried in the gound could handle it then a 50 gallon drum would work better.

I have a 1500 gal Delaware septic tank for my kennel building. The septic company recommended that I have it cleaned out every year, but I've found that I can do every 2 years if I had to. I do try to do it annually though. I have a 16 dog kennel.

Rid X will probably be the same stuff, if the rid X is cheaper go with that they all do the same thing.

It all depends on the solids that have built up in the tank. The next time you have it pumped ask the guy how full it was with solids and the you will know if it needed to be pumped or not. If the secondary tank has very little solids you will know it was working fine. The tank will always be full of liquid but once it fills with solids and they carry over into your tile bed is when you start running into problems.

The stuff you add to the tank recharges the biological population in the tank which we are killing everytime we wash chlorine and cleaning products down into the tank. The biomass in the tank are breaking down the solids in the tank so the better they are working the more solids they break down and the longer the tank can run without needing to be pumped out.

septic

Good discussion about kennel septic systems:
I put in a system about 5 years ago. The tank was an agricultural septic tank from tractor supply and then 125' drain line. The trick to dealing with the hair is a sump with hardware cloth over the lline to the septic tank. The hardware cloth helps break down the solids and catches most of the hair. I used to clean the cloth about once a week- now every month or two. The sysytem works great. The plastic screw down lid for the tank is easy to remove- checked it for the first time this spring and I had about 1/3 of 200 gallon tank full.

Septic

We have a 30 dog kennels and most kennels are full the majority of the time. We wash out a minimunm of 3 times a day. The septic tank is pumped out one time a year. We don't add any rid x or additives at all. Just good ol crap and water.
