A friend of mine who is getting a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon, (Don't blame me! I TRIED to talk him into getting a "Good dog  ) would like to know if a silent whistle is any good in the field and how far they generally reach?

I've never tried to use one, but--back before I became a dog trainer, I worked with ultrasound, and learned that the higher the frequency (pitch), the shorter the range.

Besides, how would you know if the pea was stuck?

I once ran under two judges that were stone deaf! I started to pick up my dog after 5 whistle refusals and was asked "why are you doing that" your dog is OK as far as I'm concerned." Both judges agreed. I continued with the test AND PASSED! Neither judge knew the other was deaf. I don"t see how they ever communicated. That one made up for a couple that I SHOULD have passed    Bill

That's as good a whistle for that animal as any. They seldom listen to one anyway, and when have you seen a pointer that handles?
