Is one better than the other as far as selling pups? Do you have a preference as to when you buy a pup?

I had a very nice Fall litter and they were to go home just before Thanksgiving and I had a heck of a time with that litter. Nobody wanted to deal with a pup around the Holidays. I have a litter due in June so I will find out how that goes.

I will say I kept a male from my fall litter that was born in September and he is progressing faster than any pup I have had in the past.

I have only raised 2 litters so my experiance is limited and I am sure others on here have had differant results.

For me I like a fall birth date due to my location. With a Fall birth date the pup is usually old enough to really get into water intro and the water is not ice. The other way around I run into the possibility of hitting bad weather right during what I look as a critical growth/learning phase for the dog.....but then again I use a Pro also just for that main reason.

I found my puppies tend to sell better in the spring. Late fall pups are a harder sell as a lot of people don't want the hassle of house training in the cold weather. On the other hand, I prefer fall pups as I can do OB during the winter and they are ready to really come ahead as soon a spring arrives.

From a South Texas point of view and both a raising or buying point of view, I prefer pups born in January/February. One, I can get a natural service to many of the top stud dogs that winter in Texas. Two, I think pups can take cold a lot better that Texas' summer heat. Three, when the pups are ready for an introduction to water the water is about right for the pups.

Up here in the great white north spring pups. I get piles of calls in the spring as it's a better time for house training than when it's -30 below celcius.

We have had 2 November Litters, 2 July Litters, a June Litter, a March litter with a May litter on the way.

Can't really think of any difference in any of those litters as far as selling pups. Most were sold before they hit the ground. Only problem we have had is getting the girls to cooperate in producing the right sex and color mix to match the wishes of our clients...
Lesa does talk to the girls about once a week while they are pregnant, letting them know how many yellow girls or black girls or yellow boys or black boys we need and I really think they listen, somewhat. :wink:

Pups born on the first of November are the best if you are selling them to eventually run Derbies. Trials are over in October for the most part, and you get a full year on them with their peak last few months when trials are going on (in the South anyway).

I liked having a summer litter last year cause they loved getting wet. I don't think it was the best time to sell puppies though.

From a standpoint of raising them, I like spring, maybe a Mar/Apr. birth date so it's warm enough for them to swim and spend a lot of time outside before they leave. I haven't noticed any difference in selling them. The one winter litter (Jan.) I had, they were ready in Mar. which is a pretty good time to sell them. I would imagine pups ready to go around Christmas would be the worst time. I think people get puppy fever worse in spring--while there are always people who plan and select a particular breeding I think more 'impulse buys' occur in spring!

I would much rather have a oct/nov pup that way when spring comes he is ready for FF and the snow is all gone.

at the present time i have a last May(2006) pup and we had to do FF and CC in january/febuary outside boy that was cold.

besides i work way more in the winter than spring.

I guess it's just a matter of preference. In the winter, I can do obedience, FF and CC inside and in the dark in the evenings. Land marks on the weekends, and by the time the water is warm enough, The dog is almost ready for swimby and then cheating singles. :wink:

well since spring, summer, fall i only work 40 hours a week and the winter it is 70 and most times many more plus not having indoor facilities then fall pups are best for me.
