This may be my 1st actual dog training question. :)

A friend is thru the T with his dog and all seems fine, but when he gives the dog a left over the dog takes 2-3 steps toward him (consistently) before going over. Dog doesn't do this on the right over.

Easy fix?

Oh sure, this is a very easy fix. Just explain to him that he doens't need to take those few steps before going over.

If the dog has formed a habbit I would try:
getting closer to dog than in the T - revert back to position as if in 3 handed casting ...

just practicing with the left over pile.

Reward & positive praise for correct cast. Don't "punish" or correct (if dog is CC) just replace dog in center and cast again. Sounds like something was missed in the translation during teaching the "over" concept and your friend may need to revert back to TEACHING rather than practicing.

Gradually move back away to increase distance between you and the dog to simulate what the dog would see in the single T and only when the behavior is 100% would I throw in the back or right over piles.

This will take time I would imagine so make sure there are marks and different drills interspersed. Dogs can get board and frustrated.

Now, I say this assuming that the dog is young and relatively new to the single "T" ? If we are talking about an older more experienced dog ... the rules should change .. however, usually single T working dogs are still new to the game.

Good luck.
