Ken,
This is my first encounter with bees. My wife wanted to try them (but she is afraid of them) ; so I am a new beekeeper. I never thought I would be wearing a goofy looking bee costume - but I was

To answer you question ....I don't know.
I have heard the state biologist said the bees were dying because of cell phone towers and cell phones............ I have heard other people say that mites are a problem.

Ken,

There is a huge problem with bees around the country. They've been abandoning their hives. Scientists have trapped some of the bees and can't find anything wrong with them. The really weird part is that the bears and other wildlife won't go near the abandoned hives. Usually when a hive is abandoned it is pretty quickly destroyed and the honey and comb eaten by wildlife.

Some scientists think it is from too many radio waves screwing up their internal navigation, some think it may be a micro-scopic parasite, some think it could be a virus. Regardless, it is a reall concern. About 60% of the US food supply relies on bees for pollination. Eistein once said that if all the bees in the world were to die the human race would only have 4 years to live.

It seems that most of the problem is localized to North America with it being worst on the coasts but there have been anecdotal reports of similar things in Africa as well.

While I think some of the doomsday predictions are a bit dire it is definitely something to be concerned about.

I heard last week that there is a new beetle that was accidentally introduced from Europe that carries a fungus, and the fungi is breaking out in the hives. The hives are basically sterile and with the fungus invading it they become infected and no longer usable. So far this is the best reasoning I've heard.

The bee folks have blamed everything from pesticides to cell phones, but it looks like they have finally tracked it down - I think.
