Ken,
There is a huge problem with bees around the country. They've been abandoning their hives. Scientists have trapped some of the bees and can't find anything wrong with them. The really weird part is that the bears and other wildlife won't go near the abandoned hives. Usually when a hive is abandoned it is pretty quickly destroyed and the honey and comb eaten by wildlife.
Some scientists think it is from too many radio waves screwing up their internal navigation, some think it may be a micro-scopic parasite, some think it could be a virus. Regardless, it is a reall concern. About 60% of the US food supply relies on bees for pollination. Eistein once said that if all the bees in the world were to die the human race would only have 4 years to live.
It seems that most of the problem is localized to North America with it being worst on the coasts but there have been anecdotal reports of similar things in Africa as well.
While I think some of the doomsday predictions are a bit dire it is definitely something to be concerned about.
