Trying to make a decision on whether or not to sell a dog. She's a pup I kept out of a litter almost 2 years ago. She's a great marking dog and handles OK for her age, I just haven't put the time into her as I have with the other 2 dogs. She has her NAHRA started title and is ready to run intermediate. The wife is very attached to her, and is totally against selling her. This dog LOVES to work, actually she has a hard time containing herself when I'm working one of the other dogs. I feel that I am putting her on the back burner and not giving her a fair shot. It seems that training the 2 older dogs is more of a priority, and I'm not sure why.
With our first baby coming this summer my time is going to be even more restricted to train and the extra $ wouldn't hurt either.
I'm trying to decide whether I'm being a realist by contemplating the decision or just being selfish.

In your post it sounded to me like you were leaning toward selling the pup. That's what I would do for a couple of reasons:

(disclosure: this is from a woman's point of view, one who has raised two kids)

1. Big reason. You've got a baby coming. If you're like the vast majority of couples, it'll be your wife doing most of the work, but, your wife will appreciate if your attention is very much focused on her and the baby at this time. Pup would be receiving even less attention.

2. Sounds like pup has a lot of potential. If you know someone who would take the dog and advance her, something you're time-challenged 8) to do, let them. The dog would be happier.

3. Wife says she doesn't want you to sell the dog. When the kid comes, she might just change her mind. First kid?? If so, I don't think anything prepares you for how much this will change your life.

Good luck with the new baby!!

keep her

I voted to keep the pup, her is my reasoning

1) Your wife is attached and is against it.

2) If she is part of the family and not causing any problems and not locked up in a box because of your lack of time she is probably a happy dog

3) You may get to a point with your dogs where your training only requires maint and as long as you are keeping the dog in question in shape an not letting bad habis creep in you can always advance her later.

4) Your wife is attached and is against it

Good Luck

Before I reply to the poll I need to know some facts.

1) Are you really attached to her?

2) How much could you get for her in her condition?

3) How is her bsic obedience?

By "her" I mean the wife. :)

You probably can't get enuf to make it worth selling her.

Life with dogs isn't necessarily about titles. Keep her :!: She's only 2, she's well taken care of and happy, Jill is against this, and you're way more attached to her than you care to admit  . There's nothing to feel guilty about in terms of doing right by her. She has a GREAT life with you. She's also your future breeding stock and the link to continuing your line. She can't read the rule books :? and doesn't know what the "next" title is. She just wants to know when the next meal is, and when the next trip in the truck with Dad is :D . Do I need to go on? Besides, I'd bet the farm (figuratively speaking of course - I don't even have a farm  ), that you couldn't sell her if you tried. I was "talking" about putting my foundation bitch into a retirement home later this year - my friends all humoured me and just said "Yah sure, right, we'll believe that when we see it". They waited me out 'til I came to my senses and said "You know what? She's in a forever home. There's no way I could let her go, no matter how crowded it gets here!" To which they of course replied, "Told you so :!: ". I REALLY think you're in that category too. (And if you keep talking like that - she's coming to live here in Canada with me! Jill, the baby, and the red dawg can come too - okay now I'm DEFINITELY kidding. There's no more room at the inn.)

She's definetly not an unhappy dog. Her tail wags all the time and she's so enthusiastic about EVERYTHING. Would it bother me to sell her? Yes and no. If the right home came along where she would be competing and hunting I'd do it and not feel bad about it. If the chance came up just to ship her off to someone who I didn't know anything about, I couldn't bring myself to do it. She reminds me alot of her mother, and she has some qualities that are better and some that are not what I look for. I've been thinking about it for quite some time, it just never sat right with me, even though it may be the best thing for everybody involved. I feel like I just wrote to Dear Abby!

Oh and Keith.......I couldn't sell my wife. You have no idea how long it took to FF, CC and get through basic OB.

Yeah, but she hung in there and managed to get you trained.

A word of advice: don't be sellin' the dog the wife likes. Just don't be doin' it.... She's pregnant, she's hormonal, and she will make you sorry.

Besides, how would you like it if SHE sold the dog YOU like the best?

How comfortable is that new couch Dave? 'Cause if wifey reads this you may just be sleeping there and ALL the dogs will be on the bed with her. You're playing with fire, Mr. As all the other ladies have reminded you - she's preggers and hormonal!
Whatever you do, hope everyone's okay with the final decision....

Dave,
If the right (great) home came along I would probably sell her. It is sometimes nice to be the one and only dog in a house rather than one of many (not that 3 is many) .
I gave two young started dogs away to friends over the last couple of years . These guys are having a blast with the dogs; lots of hunting, riding shotgun on the weekends, sleeping in bed with their new best buddies , etc. They think they died and went to heaven. Yesterday they both were at a tower shoot w/ them ....had a lot of fun.

However , if your wife is dead set against it .........

Ask a high $ and be particular where the dog goes.

If you don't get your price, and can't find the exact right home, keep the dog.
Ding,ding,ding..... We have a winner. That's one way to look at it anyway.

But being reasonable and practical,,,, selling might be the way to go. You'll just have to make it up to sweety. Don't mess with those hormones....
