I have a German short haired pointer that is about a year old. I came across a trainer this weekend that that from what I understand is an excellent trainer. I was simply looking for dog owners who have used him. His name is Clint Avant with Vision Retrievers. Any limes or dislikes?

Excellent trainer and I am sure his clients speak very highly of him but if you are looking for your GSP, I am not sure he the best fit. Now if you had a hot young derby prospect...

GSP ? What region of the US do you live... I'd definitely look at a pointing dog trainer .. not saying a retriever trainer cannot train a pointing dog .. just saying

I am looking to have an above average pointer and retriever. I am in Houston Texas and am from the Matagorda County area. I have heard of a pointer trainer in Matagorda County area but haven't been able to locate him/her.

Uodibar Kennels is about 3.5 hrs from you. John Rabidou is elected to Field Trial HOF and excellent GSP breeder, trainer and judge.

Another idea.. look up James Messer (Houston area) .. ask him if there is a local trainer... I can get you contact info if you don't find it readily the dude has been winning EVERYTHING lately !

I don't really think you necessarily need a Rabidou or Smith... just need a decent trainer Ronnie would be my choice...

I agree you do not need a famous field trialer to train your hunting dog. Just make sure trainer has some common sense, good work ethic and very good facilities. Not possible to train a pointing dog if the trainer has 30-40 acres and one or two recall pens. Then it does not matter how good the trainer might be. Lots of land and lots of birds, and some common sense things ie if you are going to hunt west or south Texas rough terrain with lots of prickly pear etc - probably best to have him trained on that.
